Westjet pilots are in an interesting position. “Job Action” is now legal as they are in a legal strike position. Things like working to rule, going slow, denying overtime/draft, being careful with fatigue, etc, can be suggested and encouraged by the union, whereas before they could not.
This is very expensive for Westjet, but not the pilots. It gives the pilots a lot of leverage.
The best thing for Westjet? A lockout/strike. Then it “costs” both sides equally. I’m not surprised therefore that management is encouraging a strike. Even trolls on here pushing for it.
The draft hogs can be tracked, and outted as SCABS. Someone will always know who took draft or overtime during industrial action..... always. They would be in for an icy reception from their fellow pilots for a very, very long time.
It is NEVER worth it to undermine your work colleagues. Never.

Don't worry Ripple...the defeatists & negative Nancy's are getting drowned out by a revived & focused pilot work force.

Someone will ALWAYS pick up OT to make up for the completely inadequate wages. A nice, big, fat and juicy 20-30hr credit block will always be someone’s euphoria. How can you stop that?

Let’s say the Captain decided to cross the line and fly a flight, how do they know their FO will until they get to the gate?
And if they then don’t have an FO, what gain is there if they can’t fly the flight anyways? They just crossed the line and can’t even do what their goal was.
It would seem a really divisive action for very little potential gain.
Re: Strike
You can’t. There will always be outliers. However, will there be enough to cover irrops? (Remember, this is not during a strike, just the work to rule phase).TheLastonetoknow wrote: ↑Sun May 14, 2023 9:09 am Someone will ALWAYS pick up OT to make up for the completely inadequate wages. I don’t think I’d call them scabs, in the true meaning. Just not a part of the team.
I have heard of a unique solution in the past though. Any pilot doing OT, will be paid up to the MBG, then all over is assessed by the union and put in the strike fund, should it be needed. I’m trying to remember who and under what circumstances this was done. It was in Canada though.
Re: Strike
Lol. The Union is going to withhold overtime pay now? Good luck getting the company to agree to that!Crewbunk wrote: ↑Sun May 14, 2023 10:08 amYou can’t. There will always be outliers. Re: Strike
NEVER underestimate the negative ramification of those who SCAB during "LEGAL" industrial action by an organized group of professionals. That is the worst thing you could possibly do "to" your direct peers, and the worst thing you could do for yourself or your family if you are in it for the long-haul. Undermining the efforts and sacrifices of your work comrades who are intent on bettering "your" position simply to line your pockets with easy cash is a bad move, full stop.
There is still a SCAB list from the 1980's circulating on flightdecks in the US. These individuals who crossed the line will never get jumpseat, and are outted at every opportunity. As long as their career lasts, they will never be forgotten. There WILL be a similar list in Canada.
Once on the SCAB list, always on the Scab list. Govern yourself accordingly.

Re: Strike
The company doesn’t have to agree to it. Remember, they want their pilots to be pig whores, that’s what keeps things running, dividing the group at the same time.
I’m thinking it was Air Ontario that did this. Well before Jazz. I emailed a buddy that was there at the time, to see if it was them. Besides, all it takes is the threat of an assessment.

If a pilot is hell bent on doing overtime, the pilot flies it, and then the company pays the union instead of the pilot, I'm sure that pilot would have a strong case in legal action.
And why would the company piss off the pilots picking up the overtime during labour action? Why would the company give the union money instead of the pilot? That doesn't make sense.
Another great example on how you can quickly destroy union support!
If you need to resort to blackmailing the pilot group you're representing, you're doing it wrong.

Re: Strike
Be a SCAB and do overtime at your own peril.
When you have 90%+ supporting work action, you had better believe that 90% of your peers will 100% disapprove of your behaviour.
Just watch what happens. Anyone who tries this route will learn right quick.

Re: Strike
If you're *NOT* on legal strike, and *NOT* locked out, if a pilot follows the CBA and works overtime, the union has *ZERO* right to punish.
If you punish a pilot for doing this, you're just as bad as the so called evil overlord management.

Who is this gherkin that takes the time out of his day to trash pilots on an aviation forum when he/she clearly has nothing to do with aviation? We have a finite time on this earth, what a strange way to spend it. Honestly, just take a hike. The ONLY time I see that clown’s posts is when you folks quote him/her. The ‘add foe’ option is great. It shows they post, but not the content. If all of you folks who stop feeding the obvious trolls, they wouldn’t be able to get whatever need they get fulfilled by trolling.

Unfortunately, a person like accountant misunderstands that message. When you stop acknowledging them they think they have won rather than realizing they are being dismissed as unworthy of time and effort to destroy their narrative. It's a difficult line between ignoring the trolls and hoping they go away and letting them go free range and have a negative effect on the rest of the people.
I respect your choice. Feeding the troll or starving it... I'm undecided on the best option.
I'm going to knock this up a notch with my spice weasle. Bam!
Re: Strike
It’s a tough balance, but I look with curiosity at the few that come on here and throw misinformation and suspect facts around. What is their purpose?
Do these people really think that the “battle” is won in a forum? Do they think that anyone of any importance is actually reading their endless diatribes?
My guess is that they hold some sort of function requiring debate, like a negotiator or paid lobbyist. They come on here to test their arguments, see what possible answers exist. Then, armed with possible answers they go back to their position with possible rebuttals.
So, now my take is to read their nonsense, chuckle and move on …. but, don’t answer them.
The other side of the coin though. I hope Westjet’s (and soon to be Air Canada’s) negotiators are noting these threads too. A great source of possible arguments from the other side of the table.
