Just to clarify, Pelmet didn't write that long post. It's the article linked at the top of the thread which appeared in the Toronto Sun today written by Brian Lilley. Your responses are excellent. Why not send them to Lilley to further his education on our situation.
Correct,
I am hoping for the best for this outcome and wish you guys well. But I don't think the public will be any more favourable to pilots that to government workers as the cost will go through the system and be paid buy them in the end.
There has been talk about pay versus the US. The American pilots make a lot more. It appears that the American CEO's make a lot more too.
Seeing as WJ is private, I searched AvCanada and found this......
The important thing to keep in mind is that Brian Lilley is a columnist rather than reporter. He and Ezra Levant were the co-founders of Rebel News and I think it's fair to say that they have a hate-on for unions period. Some of Brian Lilley's columns during the teachers dispute in Ontario were borderline hate speech.
The information that he quotes in the article is not accurate and it's clear to anyone who has a basic understanding of WestJet's pay scales that he hasn't done more than a perfunctory google search to write a crappy article. What's funny, is that my perfunctory google search on him shows that with his speaking engagements he likely has an income over $300,000 a year.
With Onex CEO Gerry Schwartz (at least formerly) being a big time Liberal Party fund raiser, if Brian Lilley had done any research I'm sure he would have had a crises of conscious - who does he hate more: unions or Liberals??

You guys should be doing the same, if not better than us in the US. I'm a junior Alaska Airlines captain, and hustling this year I'm going to make $370,000 (usd)

Awesome that you joined this group three days ago. Send us a pic of your pay stub. Of course, blur out the personal info.

You just made every Canadian pilot on here question their life choices.
I can't help to point out the federal tax of $3273 on earnings of $17k. In Canada, that tax would be $7-8k. That makes a huge difference. Don't ever let anyone tell you that we have free healthcare.

Sorry that wasn't my intention, just to give a point of reference to you guys about a narrowbody major airline compensation. There is zero reason you shouldn't being doing the same, if not better. Stay unified!

Right on GuppyDriver.
Give these slackjawed Canadians a shot of reality. We've been staring at our shoes and shitting in each others back seats too long in this country.
Boeing or Airbus Captain is a $350K+ job. Full stop.
We all need to get that in our heads, accept nothing less and then push it higher. Whatever comes of this WJ deal, it's a good first step, and while pay should have been higher, I see other important gains. This does place WJ Pilots as the best compensated in this country and now the work falls to the rest of us AC, Transat, etc. to build and push for more.
there is zero reason why canadian airlines cannot match foreign airlines. make it make sense why an ac pilot makes less than a delta pilot if they both fly toronto-atlanta on an a320 for example. the fares are more or less the same, so where is all the money going?

The money goes up. Those in charge look out for those around them that they know in return for those around them looking out for them.
Pilots are an operating expense, not a CEO's friend.
I'm not dipping my toes into pilot wages, but. There was a paper out some time ago that stated that it cost 87% more to run an airline in Canada than it does in the US or Europe. I don't think you have to look too far past the federal government to determine why Canada is "different" The Federal government see's the aviation sector like a big cow, they won't feed it, but there is a line up of bureaucrats milking it.

Wouldn't the additional operating expenses also affect a foreign airline operating here? example, taxes on gas or food or high airport fees etc. So most of the additional costs must be coming from HQ, whether thats from higherups or government stuff.
If you opened up Canada to US carriers they wouldn't touch 90% of the routes. They would operate the few that they can make money on due to the volume and not touch the rest.
You can’t blame them for doing what they are doing right now. 95% of us don’t have the right to work in the USA. They have a captive audience. Why would they pay more when they don’t have too. Toronto is one of the most expensive airports on planet. Until very recently it was number 1. The fees here are also insane, just look at the breakdown of your fare and see how much the airline is actually getting. If you count live in any city your airline or the partners/code shares flys too and they made a schedule with a confirmed seat the pay would be more palatable.

For me, it’s the terminal 1. The most modern and efficient airport terminal worldwide. I even ask my travel agent for extra stops in YYZ even thought there are direct flights available to my destination and the staff is so friendly and more than willing to oblige.
One time I showed up at my gate for an oversold flight and they were looking for volunteers to check in their carryons for free. I said “Wow, three checked bags for free!” And the nice friendly AC gate agent laughed and said “I’m going to call you 3-for-free!”
Now the staff always greets me with “hey it’s 3-for-free!” And ALWAYS give me my free gate checked bags. It’s such a fun and cool atmosphere at YYZ T1. I go there at least 3 times a week for a warm 12$ beer with Clamato in a stained glass, 1-2 times a week for fresh bento sushi’s and I can even skip the gym and work a sweat walking for 45 min to the international departure for a delicious dinner when I'm in a rush but want a great meal that is affordable, fast, and can match my daily nutritional needs. I even dip my bento sushi in wasabi sauce, it’s delicious! What a great airport terminal !

You aren’t the only one that gets recognized by gate agents. Although nice, it’s kind of depressing really…

This might be the best post I’ve read in a while.
Cheers for that.
I might even buy you a $12 Caesar for that comedic gold. Or a 7$ starbucks, If you don’t mind delaying the flight cuz there’s 80 people in the line.

You haven't been there in a while, have you?
Toronto bathrooms are usually dirty. Escalators and moving sidewalks are constantly broken. Avoiding getting run over by a golf cart is a sport done by all.
Instead of fixing a leak in the ceiling, they place a security tray on the floor and leave it there for 6 months.
Most taxiways are unlit, using reflectors instead.
There are taxiway signs at confusing intersections that haven't had working backlighting in years.
The Link Train between terminals is out for maintenance every morning from 7 to 11:30.
