Am I the only one with a new found respect for the good folks in Witchita and specifically the engineers that were behind that nose wheel assembly design?

Wow.
Became worried as the video dragged on they were gonna line up and take that plane flying again.

Holy geez! God damn! That's some impressive engineering... and not so impressive flying.

Pushing forward to "recover" from a porpoise.
That's a terrifying response.

@#$!... I mean, @#$!... but seriously, kind of impressive she held up to that level of abuse.
According to the comments, they left three hours later!

Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
It is (unconfirmed) reported elsewhere that the plane took off three hours later. That's enough time to change something, but not a nose strut!Became worried as the video dragged on they were gonna line up and take that plane flying again.
Too short a runway for the airplane, confined approach(s), downwind landing, too slow an approach, so no reserve energy for the flare (if the pilot even attempted to flare). But, after it finally stopped (amazingly) still standing on three wheels, it should have been shut down where it stopped, chocked and the gear safely locked down, before it was taxied anywhere. Bad landing it as it was, worse, taxiing back, and having the nosewheel collapse and a dual prop strike!

Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
It looks like the right prop contacted the runway on the second bounce.
The 441 has a trailing link type main gear and can take a lot of punishment but hell that was a really bad landing.

Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
I’d say, that’s not the first time this happened to this particular pilot and sometimes you know someone is going to end their life as a smoking hole but there’s nothing you can do.
I once tried to counsel a pilot into a new career, he was scary AF and was told he’d be a career FO but he ended up getting a different job and every Captain who flew with him would routinely take control for landing, then someone hired him as a Captain on a King Air B200. I don’t know, how he ended up passing his PPCs, I suspect I know but I did talk to an FO that flew with him, he told me he routinely took over for landing!
I literally told this guy he was going to kill himself and we would not let him take others with him. Incidentally, we let him attempt the ppc after more than 9 hours dual on a Seneca and still could not land, he passed and the T.C examiner called later that day to basically say he failed him but the candidate argued that he did not break any tolerance, he was constantly on the edge but never over. He said, do not let him carry passengers and I don’t understand why he didn’t have the latitude to use his judgment but end of the day he was worried. So, we didn’t and he quit with the above being a common occurrence, no idea what ever happened to him, hopefully not a smoking hole but would not be surprised.

I’ve flown into Nelson on the KA 350 couple of times, it’s really not that tight for landing even with a couple kts tailwind ...
Complex systems won’t survive the competence crisis
Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
I know who the pilot is, and everything about this video, including the fact they took off 3hrs later, is absolutely unsurprising. I also agree that it looks like a #2 prop strike on the second bounce.
Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
Interesting mod to the prop tips (screen grab from CZNL video).

And here is a video from when the plane was in Europe before coming to Canada. No evidence of pre-existing nose wheel shimmy on landing (6:55) as well as the right prop tip condition (2:16) as of April 2023.

Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
Fair enough, I have never landed there. The video makes it look short, coupled with the possible excuse that a pilot was trying to squeeze the plane into somewhere short, but apparently he was trying to beat the plane in, rather than squeeze it in!I’ve flown into Nelson on the KA 350 couple of times, it’s really not that tight for landing even with a couple kts tailwind ...
Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
Notice the full up elevator at 6:42. Similar to this accident.
Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
You can't just say that and leave!

But yes, first bounce, second bounce, third bounce, etc.... Were (To quote someone else) An aggression to planet earth!
Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
I'm sure it depends on a number of factors, but what would be the mx procedure for a prop strike like that on a Garrett?
Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
I believe it needs to be scoped but they may have some tolerance on how much prop damage before it’s required.
Re: Ouch! That Had To Hurt!
I dunno, that third landing looked pretty good!
Operated out of that airport for almost a decade. Flown a 441 in there in more than one occasion. No excuse for that.

N17TJ is flying again. That bill must've stung a bit. Insurance must be astronomical for the guy.
