Accident: Alaska B738 at Santa Ana on Aug 20th 2023, hard landing punches gear through wing

An Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N516AS performing flight AS-1288 from Seattle,WA to Santa Ana,CA (USA), landed on Santa Ana's runway 20R at 23:14L (06:14Z Aug 21st) but touched down hard causing the left main gear strut being punched through the left wing. The aircraft came to a stop on the runway and was disabled. There were no injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage however.

Yikes! That's a might hard landing. Weird though, the movie clip didn't show anything out of the ordinary. Was the gear collapse caused by a hard landing, or was the collapse due to a faulty part?

It was definitely a hard landing... But I don't feel like it was hard enough for the gear to collapse. There must have been some other component failure.

I also love the commentary on the video. Dude needs to chill. :lol:

I think the real question from the video is, who is the psycho that doesn’t cancel their iPhone alarm??

The 737-800 can take some really hard landings without structural damage. This seems different, from the video it really doesn’t look like the kind of landing that causes the main to go through the wing. Wonder if something was already pre-fractured or weaken.
