Immediate Jail time for pointing Laser at Air Tahiti ATR

Post by Sailtime »

Justice is swift here; Sentenced to Jail for One Year in less than a week after the incident:

ONE YEAR CLOSED FOR HAVING “FUN” POINTING AN ATR WITH ITS LASER. The thirty-year-old pointed his laser at an Air Tahiti plane last Sunday. A rash act which could have caused bodily harm to the pilot present at the hearing, but also endangered all the passengers on this flight making the Rangiroa-Papeete rotation. The man was sentenced to one year in prison for obstructing the movement of an aircraft.
He just wanted to have fun. In any case, this is what this man, just 30 years old, who was prosecuted for obstructing the movement of an aircraft, tried to explain. Last Sunday, around 7:30 p.m., he pointed his laser at an Air Tahiti ATR which was preparing to land at Faa'a airport. The captain and his co-pilot, surprised by the green light beam of the laser coming from Pirae, had directly informed the control tower.
A defendant identified
The defendant, a father, explained that he wanted to know the range of his laser. In this type of incident, which happens quite frequently, it is rare to find the perpetrator. However, the mutoi and the national police did not have too much difficulty in identifying the accused. Because the man had already been noticed the day before, by targeting the police or residents of the neighborhood to “annoy them”. For his lawyer, he made “a somewhat stupid gesture” but did not wish to do any harm. The court, after deliberating, sentenced him to one year in prison and ordered his continued detention.
