Does Transport Canada even exist?
So, it's time to renew my license booklet. Downloaded the form, filled it out, got my passport photo taken. Off to the regional office to drop it off. The office is closed; sign on the door says it's open "by appointment only". Now, I've been on hold for like an hour, listening to the recording telling me that an "agent" is "busy" helping other clients. Are they? Are they busy? Or are they "working from home", jacking off, playing video games, brushing the dog, baking pies, daydreaming about what to do with their pensions, going for walks, learning a new language, posing for their "only fans" site? What?
Last time I got a new type-rating, it took NINE MONTHS to get the stupid sticker to replace the examiner's (also not a Transport Canada employee by the way) signature in my book, which magically loses its power at the 90-day mark, but which also magically is now good for six months due to the power of a "waiver".
How much "work" goes into getting a sticker out on time? Receiving an email copy of a ride report, and pressing a button that makes a computer somewhere chatter out a sticker? Then an actual human has to take the sticker, put it in an envelope, and post it? Is that the hold-up? Is that human task not possible anymore because no-one actually works for Transport Canada anymore?
Now I hear that license renewals are being extended by a "waiver" because someone neglected to order more of those little books.
What a fucking joke. I know everybody hates these pricks. I'd phone and complain, but nobody answers the phone. Does anyone actually work there? Do we even need to do "rides" anymore? What would happen if we all just stopped filling out the forms and cut these absolute losers out of the equation? Just keep doing your recurrent training, and keep doing rides with company designates.
Why do we have to tolerate this horse-shit? Canada isn't even a real country. There are dozens of very clear signs pointing to this conclusion but this one is particularly glaring. Stop filling out the forms. Stop paying for your medical. Stop trying to renew your expired license. I am willing to bet no-one will notice, because I don't think there's anyone home.

If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself

You can try to abuse the payment system. Say you want to make a payment, and ask for a phone number from the lady that answers there.
I've tried their auto email a couple of times with success. It's slow, but they do seem to get back to you eventually. Sometimes after a month really. Once you have an email/phone number of a real person, things move surprisingly quick.
The 'appointment only' thing has been going on for years though, even before covid, and before the switch to work from home.

Re: Does Transport Canada even exist?
I sent in an application for a new booklet in August. Haven't heard a word. Don't even know if anyone received it.

I think we need to pay more taxes to solve these issues.

The fact there is seemingly no accountability on this, is maddening. Try raising it to a the next level, and crickets is all you will get.

I am in the same boat. I got ahold of someone at TC and they let me know that there’s a new exemption for the ADB.

Re: Does Transport Canada even exist?
They exist if you're patient enough. Took them about eight weeks to re-approve me to write CARs for my AME license which I had been approved to do so back pre-Pandemic...
Then another couple weeks to get the appointment booked...
Holy frig.
Got my license finally but not without being up their hole about it.
Apparently nowhere has a number to call a human except for the very nice woman that answered in YXE.

I am guessing these are CUPE workers.
Seems by the media they have better things to do than their jobs.

I sent TC an email and was shocked to receive a reply within 20 minutes!
"Yes we have your application and are processing it but our printing services are at headquarters are delayed."

The process has a lot of moving parts unfortunately, it's rare any request is handled by 1 person, so if you have 2 or 3 people in the chain and one is off on vacation or parental leave things can get held up.Meatservo wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 10:53 am So, it's time to renew my license booklet. Or late for work show, coffee/safety meetings before ANY work is done. Several 15 minute breaks, smoke breaks, 1.5-2.0 hour lunch breaks, leaving early before rush hour, 6-8 weeks of vacation, personal days, 12 sick days a year, not my job mentality, etc, etc. don’t believe me, try hanging around an office 10 minutes before opening and just observe…newlygrounded wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 8:02 amThe process has a lot of moving parts unfortunately, it's rare any request is handled by 1 person, so if you have 2 or 3 people in the chain and one is off on vacation or parental leave things can get held up.Meatservo wrote: ↑Tue Oct 10, 2023 10:53 am So, it's time to renew my license booklet. It’s well past due we start contracting this stuff out, it’s getting utterly pathetic.

Good evening gentlemen, can I see your license and medical waivers?

Safety starts with two
Re: Does Transport Canada even exist?
None of these things are true, TC is fully remote so there’s no leaving before traffic or going outside for a smoke break. Vacation is 3 weeksMinimums wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 8:44 amOr late for work show, coffee/safety meetings before ANY work is done. Not quite. They were over covid, but the ENTIRE public sector is a minimum 2 days a week in the office (hybrid work schedule) per the treasury board directive.

I would have renewed faith in Transport Canada if they introduced a 1500 hr rule, and mandated pilot retirement based on ICAO rules.

Going to need a Colgan-esk incident for that to happen, and then everybody in the industry to tell them "we knew this was coming"canadian_aviator_4 wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 12:01 pm I would have renewed faith in Transport Canada if they introduced a 1500 hr rule, and mandated pilot retirement based on ICAO rules.
