Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
What’s the better move? Corporate captain for more money and a better schedule, or commute to an airline job?
1850tt, missing night hours for my ATPL, small amount of single engine turbine, all my hours are multi pic and single pic. Mostly 703, and a bit of 702 experience.
Work life balance and money is important to me which makes me lean towards corporate. Feeling the pressure to get a seniority number and grind out an airline for the long game though.
Anyone been in a similar position before? What did you choose and why?

Usually one doesn’t choose, operators choose for you, I haven’t been logging thousands of hours of King Air PIC due to my choice to, airlines have chose not to hire me to date.frosty wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 10:29 am What’s the better move? Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
Of course. I’m in a position where I have an airline interview scheduled, and received a corporate offer this morning. So unfortunately have to make a choice, and obviously one choice could lead to no job and being stuck where I am.

Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
Take the sure thing. A job offer is more valuable than an interview. And if your pay and schedule is better at the corporate job, why even consider an airline commuting job??frosty wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 10:36 am Of course. As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

How would you be a captain without your ATPL?

Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
You can be a corporate captain with just a PPL. Company hired you for an office job and flying duties is part of your office job duties.
Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
You can be a captain in a Beech 1900 with only a CPL carrying passengers. Of course you don't need a ATPL for corporate
I'd go read the CARs if I were you. Especially as a king air AC with 6000hrsHappyflyer78 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 22, 2023 1:19 pmYou can be a corporate captain with just a PPL. Company hired you for an office job and flying duties is part of your office job duties.
Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
The term CORPORATE is too broad. The company coul own anything from a C210 to a G650. I suspect the insurance company would have lots to say,not having an ATPL
Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
PPL, sure. That post above made zero sense, but the helpful answer is that with a few technical exceptions generally you can be capt on anything under 12.5kg, so Citation, King Air, etc.
Is it on a jet? Co-captain structure? Pretty rare on the light ones though.... Also, is this airline your intended career apot? Lots of unknowns and you know best for your life. I would say take the Corp job for a little experience and pic, but then hiring could tank in 2 years and you could be stuck.... lots to think about.
Good luck! Great spot to be in sub 2k hours!

Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
The offered job is on a king air.
I was never driven to the airlines, but after working for some shotty 703’s it seems it might be the way to go, especially with the current hiring frenzy. Figured if I go airline I can always fall back down on corporate or charter ops.
For work life I just planned on going to the highest paid job with the lightest work load. The corporate job aligns with that, but airline is probably the best forward looking career move, maybe? Fomo may be playing a factor, lol.

Re: Corporate Captain or Airline FO?
How old are you? Family / financial commitments etc? You can buy the night hours easily. Don't factor that into your decision at all.
In general, the longer the timeline, the better the airline works out. If the corp job is where you want to live and airline would be commuting on reserve, that would be a tough sell.
Think about total comp over 5/10/++ years at both operators.
Schedule, benefits, RRSP is hugely variable on the corp side.
I've worked at two different 703/704 operators. One provided great pay (for my experience) and the luxury lifestyle of 5 star resorts in the Caribbean, which was great at first but it didn't take long until I started to resent the on call 24/7 nature of the operation. The second job has been mostly single days to familiar destinations and actual hard days off that I know in advance. For me my own bed beats the villa on a private island with a butler every time

I’ve been in this business for 30 years. If you are flip flopping on corporate or airline, go airline now. The hiring frenzy is not gonna go on forever and you’ll want to secure your seniority number as soon as possible for when the slowdown comes.
It’s easier to go corporate afterwards if you don’t end up liking the airline world. The airline world you will have to pay your dues with the low seniority sched, but with the amount of hiring going on now, it should be short term pain.
I would be extremely picky with what corporate jobs you take, find a well established department. Corporate lifestyles vary a lot from place to place.
I’ve done airline and 18 years of corporate, there are pluses and minuses to both.

Where is all the airline hiring going on at? From all the applications I’ve submitted, with only 1 interview offer so far, airlines in Canada aren’t hire anyone with my type of experience.NovaBoy wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 6:59 am I’ve been in this business for 30 years. Think what you want but I guarantee I have the auto reply emails from company’s I applied to and I guarantee you can ask all of them except one that would confirm they did not contact me to date.TeePeeCreeper wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 7:30 amPerhaps you should have made an effort to have sent your CV to me and countless others that offered to help.Happyflyer78 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 7:08 amWhere is all the airline hiring going on at? Not trolling here at all, a lot of things doesn’t seem right in life but indeed they are right when facts are put on the table.

Where, just about every major airline in Canada. Porter is hiring with 1000hrs, JAZZ is hiring if you have pilots licence and a heartbeat. AC is hiring at 2000hrs.Happyflyer78 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 7:08 amNovaBoy wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 6:59 am I’ve been in this business for 30 years. Any decent corporate gig is gonna require a lot more time than that. Regardless, I was just telling you if you are undecided between the corporate or airline route it’s best to go airline first in this current hiring market.
If you are that low time, going corporate is going to be a slow way to build experience. I averaged 200-300hrs/year. I did 3 times that much sitting in FBO’s.
Best of luck in wherever you end up

Unless you’ve applied your words are opinion and not fact. Fact is I applied to Jazz with close to 6000 hours mid September, majority of which is King Air PIC and they have not contacted me.NovaBoy wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 8:11 amWhere, just about every major airline in Canada. Yeah but was the king air painted white and black? Because those hours are practically worthless if they're not in a white and black king air.Happyflyer78 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 8:24 amUnless you’ve applied your words are opinion and not fact. Well friend of my daughters was just hired at JAZZ with around 500hrs, PAL Airlines is currently hiring for the Q400, and a buddy of mine with 8000hrs just got hired as a direct entry E2 Capt. So yes there is lots of hiring.Happyflyer78 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 8:24 amUnless you’ve applied your words are opinion and not fact. And yes I left a corporate job of 18 years and went back to Q400 last August, I applied and they called within 2hrs.
