A big one that is generally asked is who controls the schedule. If you have to work 6 days a week because flight school tells you to, you are most likely an employee. If you can come and go as you please and can work for multiple outfits a contractor can be argued.
I’m not sure about that, I was a salary based employee and was able to set my own hours, as long as the work I was hired to do got done nobody cared when I was there.

The easy way to know if you’re a contractor or not… is whether or not you are getting all the deductions required by law, CPP, income tax, etc.

Independent contractors often just get sent a cheque and left to deal with claiming their own income and sorting out their own pension or retirement plans.

That's part of the point Bede is trying to make. The deductions etc might not be paid because the 'customer'/employer tells you that you are a contractor. Then the tax man audits you and says 'hey, you were not an independent contractor. pay up. and those nice write offs and business expenses you claimed? guess what, can't do that as an employee! refund those please (potentially subject to a penalty)'

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship
