q400 pilot a good path to e2 pilot?
Would it be best to be a q400 pilot at porter with the end goal of being a e2 pilot at porter or would it be just as well to fly a q400 at another airline then make the move to porter?
Re: q400 pilot a good path to e2 pilot?
No. If your goal is to fly the E2 anytime soon do NOT apply to fly the Q400. Go get your ATPL and some multi turbine time anywhere else and apply directly to the E2

No the Q400 to E2 is most likely 2 years for FOs and 2.5 for bottom of the list CAs. We’re hiring Q FOs close to 1000 hrs and E2 FOs just above that (with some turbine multi time). Mid aswell just hang out till your E2 FO app gets a nibble
Re: q400 pilot a good path to e2 pilot?
2.5 years for a bottom of the list CA is extremely optimistic. At the current rate of 3 per month the lowest captain, even assuming only 70% of captains will want to flow is 35 months. 90% of captains want to flow it’s 45 months.braaap Braap wrote: ↑Sun Dec 31, 2023 11:16 pm No the Q400 to E2 is most likely 2 years for FOs and 2.5 for bottom of the list CAs. They’re not accepting Q400 captain transfers to the right seat of the E2 either.

Re: q400 pilot a good path to e2 pilot?
It's a rather interesting conundrum. The quickest path to getting on the E2 with Porter is probably waiting until you have the requirements to apply for the E2 FO position directly; as opposed to applying for the Q400 right away.
However, assuming you have the requirements to apply for the Q400 now, there is definitely something to be said for getting in now and then waiting for the E2. It will take longer, but the benefit is that when you do move over to the E2 you will get to bring all of your seniority over too.
With the amount of hiring we're doing right now (24 a month on the E2 alone) getting in ASAP is a big plus.

Yes so on the one hand it’s faster to get in externally but if you have to wait to build hours you’ll lose seniority in exchange for skipping the dash.Chaxterium wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 8:39 am It's a rather interesting conundrum. It’s always been this way. Best flow to AC? Porter or Encore. Best flow to WJ? Porter or Jazz. We should have seen it coming, that’s just how it is trying to flow a massive amount of pilots. It takes time.
Re: q400 pilot a good path to e2 pilot?
How long do you think this hiring at this pace will last at Porter? 6 months ? 12 months ? Before a slowdown ?Chaxterium wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 8:39 am It's a rather interesting conundrum. Thanks
if you are on the ground I guess there is now way but to look up!

This industry is hard to predict but we're currently getting a new tail every two weeks until the end of 2026 so I would imagine the hiring will continue until all of the tails are delivered. And we still have 25 more options. I think we're looking at hiring quite heavily for at least the next 18 months.
But I'm just a pilot so who knows.
Re: q400 pilot a good path to e2 pilot?
Where is Porter going to get all these pilots? Unless a company like Flair goes under I don’t see it. They’ve pretty much tapped out the Jazz supply of Embraer pilots. The few remaining are lifers or are very low time first officers.

When there are layoffs/freeze in hiring at AC in 6-8 months?
Re: q400 pilot a good path to e2 pilot?
That is wishful thinking.alkaseltzer wrote: ↑Mon Jan 01, 2024 6:07 pmWhen there are layoffs/freeze in hiring at AC in 6-8 months?

Okay envision this. Q400 retired. YTZ runway extended to 6500 feet. Exercise last 25 options for 100 E2s. All Q400 pilots flowed to the E2 side. We all sing Kumbayah as we dominate the Canadian aviation industry.

I can't envision any jet with a Windshear annunciator staying silent during a northerly gusty wind into YTZ. One "windshear ahead, go around" and off to YYZ. Also, even if the runway did get extended, you'd need hundreds more feet to install approach lights so the Island doesn't close for a week in fog while Pearson remains open. Those harbourfront folk would have none of it.
