NBAA fight!

Post by Prodriver »

And so it begins south of the border!

The administration is singling out business aviation for punitive regulatory and tax proposals. NBAA is fighting the attack, but we need you to make your voice heard in Washington.

Here’s what’s at stake. The administration has announced plans 5 that target the industry with punitive tax treatment, including a five-fold fuel tax increase, to $1.06 per gallon, and a change to the depreciation schedule for a purchased business aircraft, from 5 years to 7 years. All this is in addition to the sweeping plan unveiled by the IRS 4 for audits on companies using business aircraft.

Reminds me of when General Motors went to turn open their pockets to Congress and beg for billions of public dollars in their private jets.

An extra $1000 to cross the ocean or continent in your $75 million dollar jet is "punitive".

Having to wait an extra 2 years to write off the depreciation of your jet is "punitive".

Remind me, how much depreciation are YOU allowed to write off? And what's the relative value of a vehicle to your income vs a jet to gross revenues?

How much do you pay in taxes relative to these people and organizations?

US Part 91 is a joke. If I was a rich American I'd never get on any business aircraft that was operated under it.

It's good that they have people like you to fight for them. Thinking that your livelihoods are somehow connected to their strife when tons of other sectors in aviation have rightfully divorced them out of sheer necessity.

What are they going to do, fly commercial? While at the same time their records earnings were off the backs of middle class, which sorry to say is still you.

I'm reluctantly tolerant of the colossal luxury of business jet travel, but I do think that such luxury should be taxed as such. If the additional cost to fly business jet makes the lowest tier rethink it, is that bad? When I flew corporate right seat, the waste was embarrassing. We'd deadhead Toronto Thunder Bay to bring back one person, when Air Canada had a DC-9 flying the same leg, at the same time.

Unfortunately, the business leaders who really do have the inertia to steer the conduct of the general public, are the ones wasting the travel! My client in Europe will pay for me to fly business class, but I don't any more - my very small way of being just a little more travel responsible. We are behind in North America, European nations seem to have travel efficiency and being "green" about it more at the forefront of life. I was on a KLM fight from Norway to Amsterdam years ago, and who had been a passenger with us? The queen of Norway (they only mentioned after her Majesty disembarked). I'm sure the government of Norway has a nice business jet, but the queen flew KLM just like the rest of us...

Those who travel more green can benefit from a little incentive, I'm sure less tax leniency on business jets can help subsidize that! By the way, Next year will be the last year you can buy a brand new gasoline powered car in Norway, all electric after that - and they have the infrastructure to make it work!

From a fairly selfish point of view: how is the fuel tax applied? 'only' if business jets buy jet fuel? Or also if the local farmer buys avgas for his luxury 70 year old C150?

For the majority of the people, both people are 'super rich airplane owners'. But I think a dollar a gallon more will have more effect on the farmer than the jet owner. Then again, perhaps that's the point. In which case it would be quite bad for general aviation.

But that's a lot of speculation from me.

Who wouldn't fly commercial if they had the chance to travel on the same plane as PilotDAR!
