Re: helicopter fatality bc /alberta border
N7007R, a privately operated Bell 407 helicopter (serial number 54839) departed a private ranch
approximately 5 nautical miles west-southwest of Fairmont Hot Springs Aerodrome (CYCZ), BC,
under visual flight rules for a local flight to an unnamed lake with 1 pilot and 2 passengers on board
and a slung load. On arrival at the lake, the slung load was set onto the ground next to the
shoreline and the 100-foot-long line was released from the helicopter belly hook. At approximately
1736 pacific daylight time (PDT), while still in a hover, the aircraft struck trees and the pilot lost
directional control. The helicopter collided with forested terrain and the fuselage came to rest on its
right side.
E-Comm 911 services received a satellite I-phone crash notification and the Garmin Response
Center received an SOS from a Garmin inReach device. No signal was received from the onboard
Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT).
The Columbia Valley Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Columbia Valley Search and
Rescue team responded and were on scene at approximately 1930 PDT. The helicopter occupants
were assessed by a paramedic. The pilot was fatally injured, 1 passenger received minor injuries
and 1 passenger was uninjured. The 2 passengers were transported by helicopter to the Invermere
Aerodrome (CAA8), BC, and then by ground ambulance to the Invermere and District Hospital for
further assessment. The helicopter was destroyed.
