Authorized Person
Hey, just wondering if anyone knows what the requirements are to be a TC authorized person to give Student Pilot Permits and sign licenses. I tried to find the info on the TC website but it seems to be a secret. I'm assuming there's a million beuraucratic hoops to jump through. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

There has to be a need at your school, as in if 2 people already have it you won't be getting it. Then you have to go down to Transport and get a little bit of training, don't let that scare you it's quite easy, they just go through the book that tells you eveything that you need to know. It took me all of about 2 hours.
Come to think of it, I believe there was a take home exam aswell.
Talk to your CFI and if they don't know anything call Transport and talk to someone in Flight Training.
Also it's only good while youre working at the same FTU, you lose it if you change school's. And you need to be working at a FTU to get it (in case you thought it was just something to add to the resume)

It's no secret. It is just not posted on the net because it is "unofficial" and just a guidline.Captain 152 wrote:Hey, just wondering if anyone knows what the requirements are to be a TC authorized person to give Student Pilot Permits and sign licenses. If you wish more specific information, contact Transport Canada Licencing in your region, they have an officer that is responsible for administering and overseeing the AP program.
Here are some general conditions:
1) Applicant must be employed by a company holding an Operating Certificate or be a member of a gliding club.
2) Authorized Persons will only be appointed in those places and at such a time as the amount of flying activity at a given locality seems to justify. Such appointments are at the pleasure of and may be terminated by the Minister.
...aside from that, there will be an interview to assess suitability and to review procedures and responsibilities.
There is no requirement for a pilot licence, etc.

Avoid becoming the AP for your school if at all possible, unless said school is going to be renumerating you hansomely for the service. As the AP you get to become the person resonsible, in other words the person your local TC office is going to be calling all the time. Don't do it for free.
We can't stop here! This is BAT country!

Authorized Person
Are there any FreeLance Instructors who are Authorized Persons?
Would anyone have the specific CARS on the subject?
TP15419 says
(3) Authorized Persons are NORMALLY individuals associated with a Flight Training Organization.
Then in the next sentence it refers to
"They" which refers to the "normal individuals" but fails to detail anything about the unmentioned "abnormal"
which apparently refers to "freelance instructors"
I'm aware of just one flight instructor in Canada who is not employed by a Flight Training Unit who is an authorized person but just for language testing.
It's a lot different south of the border, as an FAA CFI, I can do signoffs that would require
an Authorized person in Canada.
Wonder if the NAFTA agreement would influence TC
to give Canadian Instructors similar ability, especially with Student Licences.
PM's welcome
