Ground school is in YYZ. SIM will be in YYZ or YUL

Any news on if Sunwing is planning to hire again before the merger?

The merger with Westjet has been delayed from October 2024 to April 2025. Depending on how Sunwing plans to operate the winter, it is conceivable that hiring will be required. Sunwing has 18 permanent airplanes, and they typically require approximately 40 for the winter season. If they operate as per usual, they'll likely have a number of Westjet wet-leases, plus dry-leased aircraft from Europe which would likely require hiring pilots.

We have a little over 500 pilots. We have enough pilots in my opinion. Lots of us barely got to MMG throughout this last winter season because Sunwing spent so much time training new hires. Out of almost 40 winter planes, almost 10 will be damp leases.

Does anyone know if Sunwing will be hiring anytime soon? Haven't see any job ads in a while and wondering if they will be hiring for the winter or holding off with the merger coming up.

No, if not, very little and probably a hand full of cadets.
Merger is close. WestJet is hiring.

Any reason you say they would probably take cadets?

Sunwing has commitments with Seneca and Waterloo to take on a minimum of 5 cadets per school per year. So they're keeping those commitments.

Seems too late for this given the merger coming in April. Would be hard to get people interviewed, trained, and line training done by then.

BOTL.

It’s been years since this was a thing, if you think you can sneak in then you’re actually in need of a therapist

??? They will be BOTL since Sunwing has no plans for ground schools this fall/winter... How is it for Westjet, are they going to have ground schools after October of this year?

BOTL flows from the merger process. The parties would have established a DCC (date of corporate closing in order to take a snapshot of pilots/positions. Effectively the date the corporate acquisition transacted). Anybody hired after that date would be considered a product of the merger hence BOTL on the merged list award.

The parties could choose to fight about the status of pilots hired after DCC, but BOTL is the usual placement and typically agreed in advance.
