Asthma in Aircraft Maintenance

Post by fatihizm »

Hi everyone. I'm an aircraft maintenance student and i have asthma. I'm worried about if it might be a problem when after I graduate. I searched in internet but haven't found anything. Is there anyone with asthma and found a job?

If you work in an airport, right there where the plane is, you don't need to touch the plane in order for you to be soaking in gas. The plane is parked right there but the APU is blasting, polluting the air. You gonna go home everyday, smell your uniform, smell your hair, smell your skin, smell yourself, and it smells like gas. You gonna wash this uniform and it still smells like gas. How much more if you touch the f*cking plane which you will? You don't believe me? These people can validate! This job sucks and how much more if you have asthma?

If you go to any warehouse, all of them have switched to electric forklift because the ones with tank pollutes the indoor workplace, even if it takes time to charge them, and this is the kind of working condition we get in the airlines? Lol!

All you have to do is google "aircraft mechanic" and look at all these fake pictures! It looks like a concentration camp and this is supposed to be their propaganda! Even fake pictures cannot hide the truth! Sh*tty working condition, sh*tty schedule, sh*tty pay! Absolutely ridiculous!

How would you AMEs describe your workplace? Come on! It's a concentration camp and don't you lie to me!

In general aviation (M1 work) you will probably have more issues due to the wide variety of dust/chemical exposure etc. Not that you can't wear protective masks to protect yourself and you should but just saying that there are probably more hazards in that environment. At the airlines there is very little that would be an issue, and even then you would just need to wear the appropriate masks or have a medical exemption if needed. Regardless of whether you have asthma or not, we don't want to breath in dust/chemicals if we want to stay healthy. It shouldn't be an issue unless you struggle to breathe in normal clean air or when having to physically exert yourself.

You should be fine. Know yourself and know your triggers. I've worked with other AME's who have had both severe and mild asthma that have never had any issues. Its easy to be proactive, with PPE when needed, if you are on an inhaler be sure to have it with you at all times, as well inform your co-workers so that in the unlikely event you have an issue they would be able to recognize it to render assistance if you need it. Good luck with your career!

Seriously DUDE WTF, why do you need to come on every single post to bash aviation, and the need to to compare our profession to Nazi, Germany, WTF!
Dude you need help! My work place is top notch, with everything an AME could ask for, even with Company supplied tooling, and PPE. You need to seek help cause you are bent something fierce. You keep mentioning "WE" in the industry, YOU ARE NOT IN THE INDUSTRY AND WERE WASHED OUT.. If you can't be helpful then go hassle some other folks in some other forum or something..

I was blessed enough to have the opportunity to be slightly soaked by the aircraft fuel in General Aviation

To me at least Avgas smelled great (really)

The smell isn't the problem, nobody cares about that crap

The real problem is the fact that nobody is hiring in aviation and when they do, they only hire international students

At least this is what I've seen so far and I can't find an apprenticeship to save my life literally, I am about to become homeless soon

(Because finding literally any job in Canada has become impossible unless you are a nurse or something. But apparently even nursing graduates are starting to struggle)

What is the point of going to school? I don't know

I think you should also get into snakes. If you can’t find a job in Canada right now clearly your the problem. Employers are as desperate as I have ever seen.

I think you should also get into snakes. If you have been experiencing rising cost of living and decreasing savings in Canada, clearly you are the problem. Canada is as desperate as I have ever seen.
