Rottnest Island Cessna Caravan Seaplane Crash
Watching the take-off video makes me cringe.
This should be used in all floatplane training seminars going forward.
Pretty cut and dried as to what happened.

I believe the company recently acquired the accident aircraft and began operating it on New Years Day. 1 week in operation and an accident with 3 fatalities, very sad.

Let's remember that there are real people involved in these events. In this case, the individual was known on the coast by many who fly there. Today isn't the day. "There but for the grace of (insert deity/spiritforce here) go I"...
What!??! Who said that?!?!

Re: Rottnest Island Cessna Caravan Seaplane Crash
So, as an ex-float pilot with a whole 35 hours of float experience.
Why, oh why, would the pilot try and and drag it off like that? Am I correct in seeing that as soon as they got out ground effect they stalled and flopped over?
I'm with the OP on the value of this video. There is another video of a Beaver going into a BC lake that is a must see for any and every float pilot.
And please take your infantile cultural judgements to Faecesbook, where they belong.
YMMV

The real problem with censorship is that people are not aware of it when it happens.
Re: Rottnest Island Cessna Caravan Seaplane Crash
Did the pilot try and drag it off for sure? Tough to tell from the video, but the elevator kinda looks to me like it may be deflected trailing edge down.... so...CG? Really can't tell for sure from the video, but it seems unlikely anyone would try and drag it off like that...CensoredLF wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 8:36 am So, as an ex-float pilot with a whole 35 hours of float experience.

G’day mate - please review the analysis posted by “piperdriver”
It affirms my initial observation.

Re: Rottnest Island Cessna Caravan Seaplane Crash
Lifts it off just as it approached upwind (west tip of) the ship size rock then founders past the southern-most side (“Philip rock”) in five seconds. IMO there may have been extra lift there at first (hence successful liftoff) but then loses some again passing the southern end in Sw/SSW strengthening component (starting into tailwind / lesser headwind) once past the shelter/lee-effect of Philip point (SW side of the takeoff path).I WAS Pez wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 9:00 amDid the pilot try and drag it off for sure? Q: Would laterally contouring air around Philip Rock from its windward side …. while passing so closely abeam it during increasing/gusting component from SSW/SW direction … have that effect?
