Category 1 Medical Extra Tests
Hello everyone, i'm studying for my PPL and needed to get a category 1 medical to take the written test. After doing tests with an aviation doctor, TC got back to me saying my ECG was "abnormal" which I found off because i'm in my mid 20's and have been playing sports all my life and go to the gym often, all of this without any major injuries or health issues. They're asking for a treadmill test and Holter surveillance. Has this happened to anyone else and is this something I need to worry about? This is new to me so I was just surprised to hear something was "abnormal" considering i'm in good health. Any feedback is appreciated!
Re: Category 1 Medical Extra Tests
Smiled reading this because a similar thing happened to me years ago. I was late rushing to my first ever cat 1 medical and practically ran to the office, and doc wanted to start with the ECG first of all things with minimal rest time on my end. So naturally my results were abnormally high (though apparently good to him which was the biggest surprise of all).
Doc sends in my medical and it bounces back from TC. Transport's doc sends a letter saying I was rejected as I have tachycardia, and in order to get a medical I'd have to prove their diagnosis was wrong and I'd need a 24 hour holter monitor done from a cardiologist. Obviously I'm now somewhat stressing and less so even thinking about my cat 1 at this point. A heart condition? Wtf? So I go to my family doc to get a referral. He tells me it's no big deal, that I'm clearly not tachycardic, and sends me off to the cardiologist.
Holter monitor showed nothing wrong at all and the cardiologist's final report was sent to TC. Medical was approved a week later (try that with TC's current wait times
).
Not sure what the treadmill test exactly entails, but the holter monitor is no big deal. Just gotta kick your feet up and do nothing for 24 consecutive hours. You'll be fine.
Cheers

Re: Category 1 Medical Extra Tests
Talk to the CAME who performed your medical, and ask their opinion of your ECG results. Sometimes ECGs do pick up abnormalities that are not signs of impending doom, but rather just oddities in your physiology - like extra beats, or other things.
Start off with a call to the CAME, and see what they can offer in the way of advice. Certainly do that before going down the rabbit hole of doom and gloom...
