Rookie pilot , though many agree with you taking a hard line. The problem is we dont have a military neither in size or effectiveness to back that hard line up. The usa in the late 1930s embargoed Japan. Of oil. The result was pearl harbour.Im sure you have heard the saying never back a cat into a corner.
I will repeat Henry Kissinger's quote. "Countries dont have friends just interests and long as those interests are aligned they can remain friendly".
Here is the kicker. Trump tarrifs are basically to level the playing field against the discount on the can dollar and peso . The irony is the weaker he makes our economies the more the can dollar falls which make our products even more attractive to usa companies . capitial goes where there is opportunity to make profit. The dog chasing its tail.
Which drives him crazy. piles on even more tarriffs dollar will slide further and so on . He would be better off banning usa companies from buying canada products but that would gut the ethos of free market he scribes to .and usa companies would revolt
Funny if it werent going to put alot of people out of work. And all that military equipment we said we would buy. is usd based . Making it even more expensive . We need to get the saab jas 39 block 'F' fighter jet. and norway , south korea builds a really good destroyer too.

Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
Hardly a tantrum, but it is a reaction from ordinary Canadians at the situation we've been thrust into by a bully and a tyrant. The US has now ripped up any remaining shred of credibility, of precedent and any last bit of goodwill between our nations.
We've been strong trading partners since the Canada US Reciprocal trade agreement of 1935 - and that relationship has now been irrevocably torn up, and for what?
Trump is hurting the voters he claims to represent, the blue collar worker, and yet he's already calling this a win. But, I guess you believe if Harper or Pollievre were in power, things would be different. Hardly.

Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
The entire purpose, was to make up for the tax revenue loss when income taxes are repealed, they mentioned their plan to get rid of income tax in the future. Rich people don’t buy that much more than the average person, and many of their big ticket expenses can be written off. Meet the sales tax 50% and they’ll still make a lot more by not having to pay capital gains.Sulako wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 3:36 am It appears to me that the tariffs were going to happen no matter what. Trump made that pretty clear. He made no attempt to negotiate or acknowledge the Canadian government's immediate beefing up of border security. I wonder if it is a negotiating ploy for a quick boost in popularity - maybe in a few days he will announce that Canada has made some concessions and acceeded to his demands and then drop tariffs while also claiming victory to his supporter base.
I don't see how this is going to lower the cost of living for Americans, but it seems that idea has very quickly faded from his supporter's consciousnesses. Or maybe he will keep the tariffs and use the money to lower income tax for the rich? His new tax plan lowers taxes for those Americans households making over 360K/year while raising taxes on the 96% of American households who make less than that.

It's at this time... we should pause and reflect upon the shortest premiership in UK history as a direct result of massive tax cuts for the rich.newlygrounded wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 1:24 pmThe entire purpose, was to make up for the tax revenue loss when income taxes are repealed, they mentioned their plan to get rid of income tax in the future. Ideal outcome.......inter-provincial tariffs are removed, oil and gas pipelines approved and construction started quickly as part of a new national strategy to east and west coasts in order to never again be in such a position, dairy cartel is broken up(only Trump can achieve that through blunt force) and trudeau resigns quickly in humiliation to be replaced by a temporary PM, and 'Bob' votes conservative in the next election. Trump claims a big victory and we actually are the winners.
We will see what happens.

I am told 90% of US potash comes from Canada. Cannot farm without it.
Time to immediately cut that off.
Or….
If we in Canada put 100% export taxes on Aluminum, Oil, electricity, Potash, Critical minerals, we can get the USA to pay our bills. Awesome!

Justine has a phone appointment with Trump tomorrow. Things will get settled, all the threats have been tabled and now Trump will let Justine know the expectations for a deal. I anticipate he will cave to the demands and the tariffs will all go away.
Just my guess anyways. I don’t think we will see months of trade war as it won’t be healthy for either side.

Why would eliminating our food security (dairy) be a good thing?pelmet wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2025 3:23 pm Ideal outcome.......inter-provincial tariffs are removed, oil and gas pipelines approved and construction started quickly as part of a new national strategy to east and west coasts in order to never again be in such a position, dairy cartel is broken up(only Trump can achieve that through blunt force) and trudeau resigns quickly in humiliation to be replaced by a temporary PM, and 'Bob' votes conservative in the next election. Also what use is a pipeline without a refinery? Private industry wouldn’t want to fund it due to the looooooong payback period. As much as I dislike Trudeau he’s doing a good job at unifying the country

Trump: Secure the border or tariffs!
Also Trump: Wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have a border between us?
For context, according to US Customs and Border Protection statistics, 43 pounds of fentanyl were seized at the northern border last year, compared with more than 21,000 pounds captured at the southwest border.

Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
To put that into perspective. Just the amount seized at the southern border is enough to give a lethal dose to every man woman and child in the US 14 times. Or, to give 10 million people a lethal dose every single day for a year.Sulako wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 3:11 am Trump: Secure the border or tariffs!

Or, to give a lethal dose to more than half the planet.
If that much got seized, I would venture to guess more got through. How the hell can this stuff have that much use? What are they doing with it?
Also, I don't think Trump cares about the truth. He's a liar. He was going to implement the tarrifs no matter what we did.
Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
Mexico just announced the deploying of 10,000 troops on the US border to stop illegal immigration. Trump admin stopped the imposition of the tariff for one month.
Seems simple enough for Canada but our armed forces are all in Latvia barely making a single regiment!

I have to say, I was at least a little hopeful until today, I am now really worried about where this goes.
Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
well well well
the trade war with mexico lasted less than my night time erection.
how retarded do you think trudeau must feel right now realizing that he could have negotiated rather than throwing a fit?

Have either of you considered Mexico has 130 million people almost all of which are poorer than the average American, and 2. that Canada has wayyy more natural resources hence the whole 51 state spiel? Who are you going to have in your head rent free when Trudeau is gone in months?
Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
Agreed, this has nothing to do with Trudeau, Mexico is sending 10,000 troops to the border, our border is a red herring to what Trump actually wants. He wants Canada and it resources, getting rid of the Liberals is secondary.newlygrounded wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 1:38 pm

Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
Justine and our premiers can play their cards how they want.
My play would have been more diplomatic. Simply talk about how important our trade relationship is and how we are always looking to improve it for all Canadians and Americans alike. Find out what trump really wants, make it happen. Get a deal that’s great for Canadians, we have lots of leverage. Lots of resources etc. America is also very important to us Canadians. Not worth shitting on them. Funny to see people who think we should just ditch them and jump onto the EU.
Doug ford gone full idiot mode…. Removing booze and cancelling starlink… ha! That guy acting worse than Justine. Looks like children fighting over candy. This guy needs to remember in a month the dust will settle and he is going to get that feeling of regarets!

Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
Doug Ford is hard to watch these days. He’s a drama queen looking for an audience. Totally embarrassing himself and us.
He also bought into the Covid hoax hook like and sinker. He was poster boy for the whole “flatten the curve” nonsense. He even suggested wearing tracking bracelets so you could be notified if you went near a Covid.

Sounds like 30 day pause for Canada. Trudeau sending sending military to secure borders in the interm. Game will continue.

Re: Trump threatens immediate 25% tariffs on Canada
Hard ball politics. Trump knows that 20+percent of voting americans have latino roots. Its not rocket science to know in order to have his agenda fully implented he needs control of the house and senate.in the mid terms elections.
Canada only 0.5 % see we dont count politically in the usa .
Trump manifesto is a prelude to invasion. This is right out of the dictators playbook 101 know your history.
1) Every dictator squashes the domestic opposition first.
2)Then months of selling the gloriousness of conquest. Both domestic and foriegn prep to soften up the takeover target. .
3 ) finally utimatium about consquences not complying .
4 ) takeover. TOO LATE TO RESIST
Recent examples, ww2 invasion of france vichy govt , mao in china , north korea, amin in uganda, the list is long .

But you have zero credibility when you make grade-school like comments.JustaCanadian wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2025 2:49 pm I am childish saying Justine, and I'm also not your elected official, so maybe don't hold me to the same standard as those paid to work for you
The same goes for the relentless Orange-man/Drumpf crowd/etc.....zero credibility.
It is very easy to just be factual and say that trudeau is incompetent instead of the zero credibility grade school insults.
