Fireboss Crash Offshore St. John's

Post by Orion's Fannypack »

Aircraft departed YYT for the Azores. I'm hearing it was an Air Tractor AT-802, 120nm east of St. John's. Pontoon located with debris, life raft found empty.

Edit...confirmed, Fireboss.

How was the temperature at the time? Is it possible it was caused by airframe icing?

It could be caused by any number of things. Why are you even speculating?

Speculating is not investigating.

Throwing out one possible cause, which can never be affirmed nor debunked, does not constitute investigating.

The weather in St. John's the morning of the crash was around 0 degrees Celsius. Freezing precip may have been occurring over the North Atlantic.

A lot of investigating is literally speculating. The TSB has released reports with exactly what you are describing.

You really think that they will be able to deductively figure out the cause of the accident with no CVR or wreckage or witnesses?

If they found the life raft empty it likely means the pilot survived long enough to deploy it. Possibly too injured to get into the raft.

Can a fireboss handle rough water? Would it be possible to land on the ocean without severe damage after an engine failure?

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

I think it was more likely CFIT now. I wonder what the big hurry was to head into 1/4 mile drizzle and fog with 100 foot ceilings in a VFR aircraft with no rad alt. Saving Israel from fires?
