Should I even get the instructor rating?
Hey everyone.
I have tried to get any possible job, and just got TBNT from basically everyone.
I got 530 TT, 380 PIC, 40 multi (25 PIC), 80 instrument (with 10 in actual) and almost 100 on TAA.
I have CPL with Multi IFR and IATRA, as well as my FAA CMEL and IR (not that it matter), and it's just impossible to secure a position ANYWHERE in Canada.
I have being thinking about maybe get my instructor rating to get any type of job. I love instructing and I am a former paramedicine instructor and self defense instructor for over 15 years, so it's not new to me. But my question is - should I even do it? I can barely find a job ad for flight instructor and when I do, it's mainly class 3 and above (Man I really hate the way it's done in Canada Vs. US).
What do you think? should I get the instructor rating or spend the money on time building (which honestly, even if I time split it in the US, I might be getting extra 200 hours TOP for the same amount).

Even with an instructor rating to get your hours ..when you get to 1000-1500 hours , it might be a bit of a challenge getting a 705 job because of the lack of multi crew environment , it’s a hit or miss these days … then again things could change at any given moment… maybe try a 703/704 op? multiple are hiring atm

I don't mind 703/704. There are quite a few of them up North here, but most of them don't hire.rwy31 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2025 5:13 pm Even with an instructor rating to get your hours ..when you get to 1000-1500 hours , it might be a bit of a challenge getting a 705 job because of the lack of multi crew environment , it’s a hit or miss these days … then again things could change at any given moment… maybe try a 703/704 op? multiple are hiring atm
To me, if I get 1,000 hours as an instructor, it's probably enough hours to qualify as a class 1 instructor, and there are quite a few looking for a class 1 instructor, acting as a CFI with a 6 figure salary, so I might stay on it, given that I have a family and not as young as many others.
It's not that I don't want the instructor rating, I do, I just want my money well spent, and it looks like there is far less instruction job than other jobs lol.
Re: Should I even get the instructor rating?
Did you physically visit every operator in Canada? Did you go meet people in person?
What's TBNT? What's TAA?

If as a new pilot seeking a job, wanting to make a good impression, you can’t be bothered to express your words professionally at all times, especially in a forum where many chief pilots might be reading, what makes us think you will operate an aircraft professionally, and treat customers with professionalism?

I don’t mean to sound like an butthole here but like
500 hours is good time, what have you not been doing?
Driving and visiting operators? Continuing to follow back after you apply???
To all saying that instructing is a bad job blah blah nOt MuLTI cReW so a 705 won’t hire him that’s total nonsense I know plenty of people who fly at airlines who were instructors. Please give up this whole “instructing isn’t a real gig” mantra
OP if you want to instruct then do it. I actually did it after ai was laid off from 703 back in 2020. It was a ton of fun.

TBNT - Thanks But No Thanks
TAA - Technically Advanced Airplanes. Simply it means an airplane that has PFD, MFD and, at minimum, Two axis Auto-Pilot
https://www.aopa.org/training-and-safet ... -airplanes
And no, I didn't.
Why?
A. Many States on their ad NOT to apply in any other way (I guess they are tired of people trying this way)
B. I have a wife, kids and a job, it's hard to quit it all when everyone is depending on your income...

Many recruiters added the line of "Only apply through this email/online application". I guess they don't want you to do that anymore?vanislepilot wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2025 5:17 am I don’t mean to sound like an butthole here but like

The other issue - I live in a Northwestern ON remote community, I have wife and 2 kids and a job. I can't really just quit it to travel around for jobs. It sucks, and combined with my age, which I'm pretty sure many employers would happily, even though illegal, disqualify me for, makes it unrealistic for me to do that.
And what do you mean by follow back?.. I just wait for the replay.. quite a few responded with the TBNT...
I don't think instruction is bad, quite the opposite, I like instructing, but I just hope there will be a job after getting the instructor rating...
Re: Should I even get the instructor rating?
Are you using that on your resume as well? If so, delete it. A lot of Canadians won't know what it is. And those who do, unless it's a PC12 size or bigger will have a bit of a laugh and not consider those planes technically advance at all, because they aren't.aviran9111 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2025 7:38 amTBNT - Thanks But No Thanks

Lot's of first job operators operate old steam gauge aircraft anyway, it might work against you.
Fair enough, but know that you're up against hundreds of other pilots who are willing to do those things. Having an instructor rating won't change that. Unless you have a deal with a flying school that lines up a job upon completion, it won't do much with those restrictions.aviran9111 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2025 7:38 am And no, I didn't.

Re: Should I even get the instructor rating?
I figured it won't change that portion much, but, I figured, at minimum I will be able to apply via email/online for instructor position, something I can't do now.. I am willing to relocate anywhere, that is not the issue. The issue is quitting my job and physically going to places in hope they will give me an offer, that is a risky move for me in my situation. With that being said, I did heard on recruiter said the age and family status does put me in a great advantage on most youngsters - I am far less likely to leave a company for a bigger one, as it means relocating my family (i.e. pulling my kids out of school) and not have stable income.. But that is pretty much the only advantage loldigits_ wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2025 9:04 amAre you using that on your resume as well? If so, delete it. A lot of Canadians won't know what it is. I have removed that. I forgot it's not a Canadian term, I just thought it will satisfy the PFD/MFD experience.

It’s good that you realize a lot of people would disapprove of your response. Even more interesting that you’re preparing your ego by labeling anyone that disagrees as entitled.
By the way I put your response in a spell checker:
- Question mark not period after your first sentence
- English not english
- I will be trashed not I will trashed
Careful, you’re making yourself look bad.

The difference is: The OP is A) looking for advice and more importantly B) looking for a job.
I have no need of either, but I did offer some advice. Which was rejected, which is the listeners choice.

The point I’m making is you’re not good at giving advice. The question for the class - who is the real loser of the story? One keep his rank and most of his teeth, but lose his position, the other is completely gone. When I first heard it, it was inspired by Mike Tyson saying over people like you - "Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it." And I'm saying it as someone who spent tons of times in the US around people who usually carry everywhere they go, and they know exactly why it's important to show respect. That is what usually happens when you don't have to back up your words with your life (they refer to it as "armed society as polite society").

That talks indeed about 'technically advanced aeroplanes', but does not use the abbreviation TAA anywhere I can see.aviran9111 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2025 7:36 pm I just want to add as I literally just came across it - TAA is, in fact, Canadian term as well and appears on CAR 426.75, and is actually a requirement for IATPL (either that or complex time)

I agree with some of the posters here - your opinion and advice is very much not wanted or needed, you seem to always somehow come off as some nut job stuck in the past. Apart from you, there are always amazing fellow pilots giving solid advice to those up and coming, but you just always seem to have a massive stick up your ass. Re: Should I even get the instructor rating?
I have edited my posts.leafs95 wrote: ↑Fri May 16, 2025 4:01 pmWhy are you always so abrasive and upset? You echo the sentiment "I had to eat shit therefore so must everyone else!". You should rather be happy things are easier than they were decades ago. Shows positive growth.rookiepilot wrote: ↑Wed Mar 26, 2025 1:47 pmI don’t care. I am blunt. Saves a lot of time.
Does the OP or anyone else starting out think owners of these companies are going to kiss their behinds for passing their CPL rides?
Some of these posts sure ring that way.
Try smiling a little, heard it's good for you.
Good luck to the OP.
