Some gliders do have an engine that is retractable with folding propeller blades. Either an engine that can be used for takeoff or a sustainer for in-flight use only. I am told that one does not need a powered pilots license for this, even though you use the engine for takeoff and I assume, could use if for approach and landing as well.......
C-FTAD, a privately registered, Schleicher ASH 31 Mi powered glider, was on a local flight from
Invermere Aerodrome (CAA8), BC, with only the pilot onboard. While climbing through
approximately 500 feet above ground level after takeoff, the aircraft’s engine (Austro Engine
IAE50RAA) shut down unexpectedly when the secondary fuel pump had been turned off. The pilot
restarted the engine and noticed fuel quantity now indicated the fuel tank was empty. Shortly
afterwards the engine stopped again, and the pilot smelled smoke. The pilot immediately turned
the aircraft back to the aerodrome, engaged the propeller lock to reduce drag, and landed on
Runway 15. The cockpit then started filling with smoke, so the pilot evacuated the aircraft and saw
flames engulfing the aircraft. Persons nearby attempted to use handheld fire extinguishers to put
out the fire, but the extinguishers had little effect. A nearby water truck was able to extinguish the
flames, and a firetruck arrived about 10 minutes later. The aircraft engine and fuselage section
around the engine sustained severe fire damage. No injuries were reported.

Imagine how could it would be to tell people you got an engine failure in a glider.
Or, depending on your view on life, how incompetent you must seem to be able to *get* an engine failure in a glider

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Most people in the glider community are aware of self-launch motot-gliders.
Even say the term "self-launch motor glider" to any licensed pilot, and the term is pretty self explanatory.

Thank goodness someone came along to explain all the humour out of the joke!
