With the chronically understaffed ATC stations, how else is one supposed to do some scenic VFR flying around Vancouver?TeePeeCreeper wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 7:54 pm https://vancouversun.com/news/yvr-polic ... rol-cessna
Never a dull moment in YVR!

On a more serious note, it's quite interesting he managed to land the plane. Must have had some training at some point.
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Apparently from what I heard it was a “discovery” flight from a flight school with a licensed pilot. Hopefully he discovers a long prison sentence but it’s Kanaderp so likely probation and a promise not to do that again.digits_ wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 8:00 pmWith the chronically understaffed ATC stations, how else is one supposed to do some scenic VFR flying around Vancouver?TeePeeCreeper wrote: ↑Tue Jul 15, 2025 7:54 pm https://vancouversun.com/news/yvr-polic ... rol-cessna

There was only person onboard. The hijacking news is fake.

That's a Victoria Flying Club aircraft. I wonder if he was a student or how he got the keys. It reminds me of this incident a couple years ago:

Where were our F18's?
Down for maintenance?
Down for maintenance?
Re: Stolen/Hijack Victoria Flying Club 172 lands in YVR
I dont know how or why you would say that when you clearly don't know what happened.
The guy was with a flight instructor....they taxied out to the end of the runway and when they reached the hold short line - the guy pulled a knife and threatened to kill the instructor if they didn't get out. The instructor exited the aircraft and he powered up and took off.
So yes - it was hijacked.

As someone else has already pointed out, you are very much incorrect. It was indeed a hijack.

Anyone remember this one from ‘09?
That line was ridiculous.Maundrell said the college was trying to determine whether the pilot was a student there.

What a joke that we have to rely on American F15s for interceptions …

Shaheer Cassim, 39, has been charged with hijacking constituting a "terrorist activity" and a "terrorist offence" under two sections of the Criminal Code. He is a commercial pilot and formerly flew for KD Air.

Re: Stolen/Hijack Victoria Flying Club 172 lands in YVR
The flight to YVR was 40 minutes.
The nearest 18's are in Cold Lake. Call out, ground crew pre-flight, Pilot pre-flight, start sequence, taxi, launch and flight time to Vancouver.
You want full afterburner with those fries ya mooyack.
Re: Stolen/Hijack Victoria Flying Club 172 lands in YVR
And just where might the nearest 15 be?
Whitby has a squadron of FA-18 Growlers. Ya think we should have maybe given them a call, mooyack.

The suspect clearly has some mental health stuff going on.
From his Facebook: "I am the messiah sent to save humanity from climate change and usher in an era of world peace."
I hope he gets proper help soon. FWIW he graduated from high school in Lloyminster 25 years ago, then went to university in Alberta and BC.

It was probably from Portland National Guard Base. It's bad timing to once again be relying on American defense while we are trying to pretend we're a real country, and negotiating a trade deal with the US that lets us keep being one.

Cold Lake. And yes, 60-70 aircrafts are down for maintenance out of the 79 at any one point.
Re: Stolen/Hijack Victoria Flying Club 172 lands in YVR
Yes I do. It’s an absolute shame that we have to protect 10M km2 of airspace with a barely dozen semi airworthy F18 and have to rely on a foreign nation to protect our interests.

The odd thing is that a good chunk of the human population accepts this kind of stuff as perfectly normal from their own religion's founders. I wonder if there were any drugs involved.

Commercial pilot, flew for KD Air for a number of years, in and out of YVR. What were they flying then, Senecas?
Wonder why he didn't just rent an airplane. But honestly, we've normalized public inconvenience as legitimate and legal protest for whatever the cause (but largely climate). Blocking roads, blocking airports, what's the difference?

Almost like Portland is much closer than Cold Lake where the CF-18’s are based.
It’s NORAD. This is what it’s for.

They were scrambled out of McChord Field near Tacoma. Either way NORAD was supposed to be mutual yet we hide our defense aircraft in the middle of the country. We have no intent to defend any airspace. Our major cities are also left defenseless from foreign attack, or the "messenger of Allah" hijackers that result from our insane immigration policies (that nobody I speak to even supports).
