Sorry but I disagree the time to get help for mental health is before they do something like this. At this point they need to get maximum sentences under terrorism charges and lock them up for life. What’s next were the 9/11 hijackers also just having mental health trouble ?Sulako wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 1:35 am The suspect clearly has some mental health stuff going on.

Hold your horses there. Terrorism charges for this seems a little out of whack... Re: Stolen/Hijack Victoria Flying Club 172 lands in YVR
Sure demonstrates the utter uselessness of sending an F18 or F15 to “intercept”. Like what are they going to do about it, make faces at each other? High density urban setting, nobody is going to shoot anything. Would have been an even more useless response if it was a legitimate threat from a cloud of drones. We’re well-equipped to fight last year’s war but totally unprepared for the 21st century.
Ya gotta admit the perps defence of “climate concern” was absolutely brilliant. We have an established judicial pattern of tolerance for blocking roads and transport, inconveniencing the travelling public, all in the name of “climate protest”. We’ll see who funds his legal defence.

"Terrorism is the use of violence or the threat of violence against non-combatants to instill fear and achieve political, ideological, or religious goals."
I'd say this incident fits. He used the threat of violence to instill fear in both the flight instructor, and the people on the ground in YVR. He did this to achieve political, ideological, AND religious goals (invoking the name of Allah etc).

Just because he's religious doesn't mean he wants to achieve a religious goal. Other than the instructor, nobody was afraid of a 172 flying circles above the airportitsgrosswhatinet wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 7:29 pm "Terrorism is the use of violence or the threat of violence against non-combatants to instill fear and achieve political, ideological, or religious goals."

I would be surprised and disappointed if he got convicted for terrorism. Don't get me wrong, a severe punishment might be appropriate, but calling this terrorism just devalues the meaning of the word so much.

Will be interested to learn if there’s a link to the tower threats from 2 weeks ago.

Pretty sure that the media got that one wrong as usual. McChord hasn't had fighters stationed there in probably close to 20 years.Daniel Cooper wrote: ↑Thu Jul 17, 2025 12:14 pm They were scrambled out of McChord Field near Tacoma.

They actually do have a detachment of Oregon ANG at McChord.

Is that confirmed and from how long ago? Nothing noted in the news which they have always done in the past or even photos which these days is unheard of.
