Question about seniority at majors

Post by Buda01 »

Hey AvCanada,

If I join Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, or Porter (or any other major) as an FO, and then 10 years of seniority later I decide to transition into the left seat captain position, will I be ten years seniority in wage and benefits (schedule and such) as captain? Or I start over? I guess its a different answer for each company. I'm very new in this industry, and everyone I ask seems to have different answers. I'm planning my next career step. Thanks!

If you start today, get a seniority number of 123456. Then in 10 years upgrade to Captain, you'll slot into the captain list where your number goes. Captain with number 123455 will be senior, to you Captain 123457 will be junior to you. This is for schedule and vacation bidding.

As for the pay question, this depends on the operator. Porter has some gong show system for years of service carryover from fleet transfer and upgrade on the two fleet types. Thank god they're getting ALPA to come in and simply the sysyem.

AC, you carry years of service to whatever position you hold. Sit 220 FO with 30 years at the airline, then bid 777 Captain, you'll be at the top of the 777 pay scale. Your position on the pay scale goes with you.

I'll deferr to others for TS and WJ. I'd guess they're similar to the AC system
