I specifically said I'd like the provincial government to FUND THE COURTS and build more jails! Guess who never mentioned this? PP. His plans had ZERO mention of allocating funding to the provincial courts which handle nearly 100% of criminal cases...

I want change! I want people to be put away, but you won't fix this by longer sentences (PP's only plan in regards to crime) if they don't even make it to trial due to delays!
A) You go on about the provincial government to fund courts and build more jails and then slam PP for not mentioning this. Why must I explain to you that PP leader of the FEDERAL Conservative party.

B) Why must you lie about PP and say that his only plan regarding crime is longer sentences. A big part of his platform was "Pass a Three Strikes and You’re Out law to ban bail, parole and house arrest for repeat serious criminals." Now, remember those 256 people that I mentioned(and of course you never mention) that were murdered by criminals out on bail and house arrest. Probably at least half if not more would not be murdered in future years if the policy were implemented. Think about that next time you continue to prove my initial statement correct that you have zero credibility based on you misleading statements(or intentional lies).

Seeing as I strongly suspect you didn't vote for the Conservative party, I would suspect that you have repeatedly voted for a party that supported Bill C-75. Based on your statements on this thread, it is obvious that you support the bill.
You realize the federal government regularly earmarks funding to the provinces and well as cities for certain initiatives? Why has he totally ignored this part of the problem? Could it be because his plans aren’t intended to fix anything?

I have proven to you multiple times 99% of the problem is at the provincial level, extra funding would fix this over the course of a few years but not one conservative candidate at the federal or provincial level is taking about it….

The non withstanding clause has never been used, crime is significantly lower than in the 90s so it seems incredibly heavy handed to use it to pass a law that I have proven to you will make almost no difference to public safety.

The limit on using that clause is 5 years, let’s say there are zero legal challenges to using it and it goes through. What will happen in 5 years if you don’t fix the court backlog?

BTW his 3 strikes law requires 3 CONVICTIONS! And guess what? With the courts backed up for years already, this law wouldn’t even have an effect unless you repeal r. V Jordan 😂

There you go again putting words in my mouth. I disagree with a lot of parts of c-75 I feel like it was well intentioned but the road to hell is paved with those. I’m more than happy to criticize a policy by any party if it deserves it. But rather than ask, you put words in my mouth.

It seems like a pretty valid point, when you consider that the Canadian manufacturing workforce shrunk by an estimated 334,000 jobs in the immediate aftermath of NAFTA.

And while there was job creation, seemingly as a result of NAFTA, the jobs were largely part-time rather than full-time. Canadian firms were bought out by international ones at a record setting pace - which inflated stats around investment in Canadian businesses, but the vast majority of this investment was purchases. How about the supposed shielding from US anti-dumping tariffs? The forestry sector has been decimated multiple times by patently bullshit softwood lumber tariffs due to Canadian "dumping" of lumber into the US market - and yet the US is heavily reliant upon our lumber supply. Still didn't stop all those mills from getting shut down permanently due to the tariffs...

I mean, it seems pretty prescient to note that Turner and Ed Broadbent predicted that NAFTA would likely lead to an erosion of Canadian sovereignty as our economy was "harmonized" and tied to the US economy. Now here we are, 31 years after Mulroney negotiated (and signed the ratification document) and Chretien signed on to NAFTA, and you still want to tell everyone that it was a net positive for the majority of Canadians?

Now here we are, with the second coming of the tangerine menace and his little crony "just dance" Vance, and you're going to continue pretending that our economy was saved by NAFTA? How about CUSMA then? Oh, but it's all the Liberals, Turdeau's, and the dreaded LEFT's fault!

Folks….as I stated, NewlyGrounded has zero credibility as he literally lies to you. Therefore, aside from proving him in this one item to be wrong and lying to you again, no further discussion or response will be made by me to the person who supports a policy resulting in hundreds of murders each year.

With regard to no conservative at the provincial level talking about funding for prison overcrowding, you can read this article:

https://www.thetrillium.ca/municipaliti ... l-10895928

Following up Ford, Solicitor General Michael Kerzner touted the government’s plans to spend $1.2 billion on a new 345-space correctional facility in Thunder Bay. He also said he’s asked Ministry of Solicitor General officials to “go back to the seven jails that were closed (under the previous government) and see which ones we could possibly look at re-opening.”

In the platform that Ford’s Progressive Conservatives released before the provincial election this February, they promised they would build more jails “so that we have enough capacity to keep dangerous criminals off our streets and behind bars, where they belong.”

https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/1004 ... t-capacity

“ The Ontario government is allocating over $29 million to appoint at least 25 new judges to the Ontario Court of Justice (OCJ) and hire 190 more Crown prosecutors, victim support and court staff.”

As I stated earlier, the Conservatives government brought in the Free Trade agreement that is saving our economy today. The Liberals(and I would guess the NDP) opposed this. Thank the conservatives for this and your quite possibly your career/standard of living. If it were not for the free trade agreement with the US, we would have across the board tariffs. Instead, it is only on a small portion of our economy and even that appears to be leading us into a recession based on the latest statistics.

Forestry is outside of any free trade agreements, so is irrelevant to a discussion about whether having a free trade agreement is beneficial except to say that if it were in CUSMA, those mills would still be operating. So I sure wish that they were part of a free trade agreement. If it wasn't for free trade, we would have tariffs on everything like Europe/UK/etc.

If you have a problem with NAFTA(ie the part that brought in Mexico), that was brought in by the Liberal government later on.

A "free trade" agreement that has resulted in job losses, and a steadily eroding standard of living, benefits, social supports, wages, etc. Yeah, what an accomplishment that Lyin' Brian brought us...

Forestry IS NOT outside of any free trade agreement, and was a part of both NAFTA and CUSMA/USMCA alphabet soup. NAFTA was supposed to end the idiocy perpetrated by US forestry groups pertaining to so-called "dumping" of Canadian softwood lumber products into the US market. Instead, the US continued to raise countervailing duties against the softwood lumber industry, which decimated it in the 80s and 90s. What's left is a shell of the industry, that has been consolidated by a number of large firms. Oh wait, that's what you like to call a success of NAFTA - the consolidation of previously Canadian owned firms being rolled up by US companies. True, as long as your stock options and dividends keep increasing you'll call anything a success.

If you actually bothered to read up on the matter, even from biased sources like the Fraser Institute, you'll see that you are incorrect in your assertions regarding forestry and so-called "free trade" agreements.

I don't see any politicians in Canada saying that they want to get rid of having tariff-free access to the US under CUSMA. The conservatives gave us that access. I have heard a desire to ditch Mexico in past months. the liberals added them in.

I'll stick with what the conservatives gave us.....along with all the energy projects that the liberal fools stopped dead in their tracks over the last decade(I see carney is now desperately trying to work something out with Germany for natural gas exports after the liberal/NDP fools previously said there was no business case for it.)

I think this headline says it all about Canada's "Lost Decade"...

"Canada's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad decade. The numbers prove it
If Canada had stuck to 2015 trends, we'd all be $4,200 richer per year, and thousands killed by crime, drugs and health shortages would still be alive."

What the hell did I just read? I dunno, but I deleted a whole whack of it. Copying and pasting the same post over and over again is annoying, and will quickly lead to vacations.

Thanks Sulako.

In the interest of moving on, both Newly Grounded and myself have agreed to move on from our disagreement and leave the thread to the subject of tariffs, which we had strayed from.

Call it agreeing to disagree.

Looks like the forestry industry and automotive are going down the tubes as Canada protects the dairy farmers ensuring that we pay extra for our dairy industry. Meanwhile, a big economic boom from a pipeline is blocked.

How sad.

Get ready for tough times Canadian....and you voted for much of it.

WCS is trading at $45 and change. The TMX that Trudeau twinned isn’t even at capacity. Provincially owned resources don’t benefit most of Canadians. The East imports, refines, and exports foreign oil because it’s more profitable and their refineries can’t handle bitumen. Lumber is a tiny industry making mostly Canfor and Jimmy Pattison richer after they closed most of the mills and started exporting raw timber (thanks BC United Party!).

I don’t drink or eat dairy. Neither do an increasing number of people. Cheese tastes like rubber now. Not because of the Liberals. Because of the type of corporate greed Conservatives love and encourage.

Where was your protest when the Oshawa Truck Plant closed down in 2009 after Harper gave GM billions of taxpayers dollars? When Caterpillar closed the EMD locomotive factory in London in 2012?

Is that what you voted for?

Or are you smart enough to realize that you can’t a la carte policy, all politicians lie, and no complex geopolitical or socioeconomic problems have a singular root cause that can be distilled to “therefore, Liberals; therefore, Conservatives”.

I'd say the logic of the above reply provides a good explanation of the financial distress that this country has voted for.
