When will hiring start again?
I've heard a lot of different things, from different people in the industry.
Apparently hiring is slow on the entry level because the 705 carriers have too many FO's and are waiting for people to upgrade to captains. Obviously airplane delivery delays aren't helping either.
If that's the cause, my understanding is it will take several months or even a year for the 703 and 702 employers to start hiring? I'm finishing up my licenses and I'm wondering how fast I should finish up my IFR as well as my IATRA rating?

When Canada ramps up domestic manufacturing and natural resource extraction.

If you look at the last 25 years, this is still arguably the best time to get a license.
No you might not get on a 737 at 250 hrs like a few lucky ones but you won’t have to do 3 years slaving on the ramp in Yellowknife and clean the shitter either.
Wasn’t that long ago that your typical navajo/metro capt had 4000+ hours.

Complex systems won’t survive the competence crisis

Just get it done as fast as possible. You can't time it for when you might get that call, and the sooner you start working anywhere, the sooner you'll get that job that you actually want. Don't procrastinate, be ready to catch the wave, because you never know when it actually arrives
Re: When will hiring start again?
I know my chances are 0.01% but I'm happy enough with my day job I wouldn't want to move to ramp somewhere for 1/3rd of what I'm making now. I could make it work for a year or two for a flying job but anything else probably isn't sustainable for me.safetyfirst123 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 17, 2025 9:21 pm Just get it done as fast as possible. But just because you get your licence, doesn't mean you have to take the first job you get. I guess the question is whether you have to quit your job to do your licence, but if you can manage both, then I'd do it as quickly as possible. Like I said, it's impossible to predict when hiring will start again. AC and Westjet both plan to ramp up hiring early in the new year. That should create movement elsewhere. It's impossible to know for sure.lostav8r wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 1:04 pmI know my chances are 0.01% but I'm happy enough with my day job I wouldn't want to move to ramp somewhere for 1/3rd of what I'm making now. Re: When will hiring start again?
Thank you for explaining! I'm hoping to find a local flying job that isn't ramp/dispatch since I can probably juggle flying if there is reserve but not something fully in person like ramp.safetyfirst123 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 2:04 pmBut just because you get your licence, doesn't mean you have to take the first job you get. Fingers crossed for the new year

Good luck with that.

Re: When will hiring start again?
If it doesn't happen I'm ok with my current job, at the end of the day flying is just a job. If you can get a better one with holidays and weekends off why wouldn't anyone?
Re: When will hiring start again?
At the end of the day, a career in aviation will typically require some sacrifice, if you aren’t willing to do that, you likely won’t make it.
The potential upside of a career in aviation is better than most jobs, if your job will eventually pay you 200k or better than sure continue with that. It is a job, it is also a job with a huge variety of possible positions, not sure what you’re doing but I can’t think of anything I’d rather do that would also give me the same standard of living.
You could get lucky for sure, my first two flying jobs were in my hometown, eventually I had to move to advance my career, however that was always the plan, had I stayed home and did what everyone else did(mining town), I would have retired 4/years ago with a full pension. Like my dad, like my friends but none of them were happy going to work, so I decided to get out of dodge and that delayed retirement by a full 12-14 years but still no regrets!
Good luck, hope you find something!
Re: When will hiring start again?
Sorry to say this if you aren't willing to make sacrifices, both in life and financially, flying is likely not a profession you should be investing in. Maybe just fly recreationally and work a job that can sustain your life.lostav8r wrote: ↑Thu Sep 18, 2025 1:04 pmI know my chances are 0.01% but I'm happy enough with my day job I wouldn't want to move to ramp somewhere for 1/3rd of what I'm making now. Re: When will hiring start again?
You mean.. when Canadian resource and manufacturing concerns start hiring and paying workers.
Enough of this bait-and—switch supply-side nonsense. Like Alberta has never pumped so much oil yet hired so few workers.
Re: When will hiring start again?
You need to pay your dues! Work the ramp, low starting pay, to one day fly a shiny jet. That is the way!
