Accident location - Beaver CF-IOE

Good day,

De Havilland DHC-2 "Beaver" registration CF-IOE crashed on Sat. Aug. 13, 1955 at Namew Lake, SK ( about 24 miles NE of Cumberland House).There were 4 fatalities and 2 survivors. On Aug. 3 and 4, 1956 a cairn was built near the crash site.

Is anybody aware of this cairn / crash site? Lat. and Long?

I have contacted the RCMP at Cumberland House but they were not aware of the accident or the cairn. Are there any lodges in the area?

TC accident reports are also vague other than "Namew Lake".

Sorry but I can’t find too much other than a reference to a location called Whitey Narrows. It is the narrows between Cumberland House and the south end of Namew Lake.

I did some more digging. I found that the accident report is filed in the National Archives under RG 12 Volume 1194, 5002-476. You can order this from National Archives but it is rather cumbersome. Another file I have says location is N54 06 W101 55. This puts it more or less on the south west side of Namew Lake.

I have to make a correction. The lat and long show it on the SE side of Namew, not on the shoreline but slightly inland.

I have ordered a copy of the accident report from Library and Archives Canada. Hopefully there are more accurate details of the location.

I used to fly into Sturgeon Landing on floats around 1974…….there is a small settlement accessible by road now! You can likely get a boat and guide there!

I just received the accident report from Archives Canada. It is 55 pages long but there is a lot of repetition. The location of N54 06’ W101 55’ puts it slightly inland from the SE shore of Namew Lake. I have found that these locations on older reports are sometimes inaccurate.

2 passengers survived with minor injuries. One of them had a little flying experience. They were checking out mineral outcrops in the area. They were landing towards a sheltered bay near an outcrop when the engine stopped. The witness said they were at an altitude of about 100’ and the aircraft impacted terrain in a nose down attitude about 50’ from the shoreline. It immediately caught fire.

Hello 180 guy,

The basic information is in my first inquiry.

The cairn was built by the Regina Imperial Oil Ltd staff near the crash site on August 3 & 4, 1956.
Transportation was provided by DHC-3 CF-IOD. The pilot was Dave F...... and the AME was Tom R......
To the best of my knowledge, the site was last visited in the summer of 1969 by DHC-6, CF-IOJ.
The pilot was Lee W.... and the AME was Gerry E.....

NAP sent me the TC accident report with coordinates and a map which I have attempted to attach.

The coordinates are N54" 06, W101"58 on the south shore of Namew Lake SK. NE of Whitey Narrows

Ideally, I would like to obtain a picture of the current state of the cairn / memorial and what the plague says.

I would also like to have the company that installed the cairn encouraged to maintain it in a respectful manner.
