And it doesn't port between bargaining units, provinces, etc.
Why not? We can start by adopting it as a general ALPA policy and turn it into an ALPA style seniority number. Make it reciprocal between different bargaining units. Whoever participates gets the protection/advantages. And let it grow slowly as every collective agreement gets renewed.

The benefits to the pilots would be huge.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

I was replying regarding nurses... They don't port between bargaining units, provinces etc. They still need to get hired. They aren't eligible for jobs unless they have certain qualifications, seniority only comes in when it's 2 qualified people in the same unit applying for same job, if you're not in there unit it has no bearing. Also you are talking about a very narrow band of pay, maybe $45-$60 an hour range almost entirely based longevity, not position.

Most pilot groups don't pay like that and I wouldn't want them to pay like that. I don't want status pay. I like the CA pay / FO pay and formula pay model.

You want to be a nurse, go be a nurse.

The supplemental part above RPP limits is wholly paid from general revenue and is at risk were there to be a shutdown, although there is some insurance built in to the individual accounts to cover a part of it. Another risk is that the company does manage the registered plan, it is currently in multi-billion dollar surplus, but there is the potential for bad faith.

With the TB pension plan on the other hand, it is completely separate from the company. The company sends their cheque along with your contribution every month and it's wholly out of their hands and managed by the beneficiary appointed trustees. That's the greatest thing about that plan, fully out of company hands no matter what happens.

Thanks for the info.

Looks like the TB pension is the least risky.

My experience with bankruptcies is that everything is tied up by lawyers. I'm guessing the DB pension would also be tied up.

I have colleagues who are still fighting in court to get their promised benefits from a bankrupt flag carrier - went under in 2009!

Took 16 years to get money owed to me from a Bankruptcy

Bankruptcies are nasty - only winners are the lawyers!
