If you put your phone into Do Not Disturb, it will silence all calls UNLESS the same number calls twice in a short period of time, or the caller is on your favourites list.Inverted2 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 8:49 am Any iPhone experts want to weigh in on how to stop these? When I’m on call for work I can’t put my phone in silent mode or “airplane” mode.
“Do not disturb” doesn’t keep Amber quiet so any other ideas?
Whoever thinks that having that horrible screech go off at 4am on peoples phones 700km away should be locked up and listen to that sound 24hrs a day.
If your phone is on vibrate, it will only vibrate for the Amber Alert.
If it's affecting your safety, fill an SMS. Enough of those will force airlines to bring it up with the government.

That's actually a user defined setting on most phones, although likely the default.notwhoyouthinkIam wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 12:14 pm If you put your phone into Do Not Disturb, it will silence all calls UNLESS the same number calls twice in a short period of time, or the caller is on your favourites list.
My phone was on vibrate AND do not disturb. Still woke both of us up with that godawful screech.notwhoyouthinkIam wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 12:14 pm If your phone is on vibrate, it will only vibrate for the Amber Alert.

The most effective way would probably be a major switch over to android phones. I trust Apple more to change the government's policies vs a few pilots SMS'ing it.

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
The worst part is we live 6 hours away from the event. This is a total government abuse of power. I didn't even care to look what it was for at the time as I was sleeping. My last Android phone I could turn them off. I am ok if they want to send text info that pops up on my screen, but not ok to make that god awful noise at 3AM.

They found the kid, by the way. Let's at least remember what's important.

Makes you wonder if the Amber Alerts are being used to let the fugitive know that authorities are looking for them...they would, of course, also get the message on their phone.RedAndWhiteBaron wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 5:25 pm They found the kid, by the way. Let's at least remember what's important.

Maybe that's the plan all along: piss off the fugutive with all those alerts so (s)he gives up and returns the kid.linecrew wrote: ↑Tue Jun 08, 2021 8:37 amMakes you wonder if the Amber Alerts are being used to let the fugitive know that authorities are looking for them...they would, of course, also get the message on their phone.RedAndWhiteBaron wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 5:25 pm They found the kid, by the way. Didn't the Amber Alert name the wrong suspect? So it was worse than no help.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
For the IPhone possibly jail breaking would give you the tools to turnoff the app. In android the app can be disabled/removed once you have super user privileges after rooting phone. I will field the question on XDA about the IPhone.

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
Our government thought ahead and realized that if people could disable the alert, they would not be able to reach everyone in a real emergency, so they outlawed the disabling of alert notifications.
And then they sat back and watched as an entire province larger than France and Spain combined (or 1/3 the size of India) all got notifications of an abduction over 500km away.

Send your MP a complaint AND file an SMS with your company every time it interrupts your sleep before a flight.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
What is the proper way to complain about AlertReady abuse? Their website doesn't list anything.

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
They didn't think about standards before they implemented it.
Again, if it affects your rest before a flight, file an SMS. The unions and companies with AOCs should be pushing for change.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
Does anyone know if this setting in Android will finally stop these alerts? I recently lost a lot of crew rest because of a 1AM alert occurring 15 hours away from my hotel in Vancouver.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
After the most recent 1am alert, I searched if there was a way to silence and what I read was these alerts have to, by law, bypass silencing methods, so I’m doubting it.
The only method to avoid, again from what I could find is airplane mode, I was annoyed as I was hours away, albeit not quite as far as you but I also understand why.
Getting a message to all phones, I’m assuming on the network and registered B.C numbers makes it so there is nowhere to run, for the kids sake.

These instructions work relatively well on Android phones:

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
Unfortunately not. As mentioned, it disables *all* emergency alerts, which probably isn't what you want.digits_ wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2026 7:21 am These instructions work relatively well on Android phones:

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
It's exactly what I want. It's also the only option in Canada as everything gets send as an emergency alert.CpnCrunch wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2026 7:55 amUnfortunately not. Which government emergency alert would you still want to receive?

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
You can use the "alertable" app for that. I think for tsunamis there are some local programs in place as well.

Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
I've decided to turn off all emergency alerts. The odds of me and my passengers being injured or killed due to my sleep disruption is higher than me and my family being killed by a natural disaster.
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
You know you have a duty to show up rested, if your rest is interrupted and you feel tired, you should be booking off.
I have done it from hotel false alarms, never ever had any pushback!
Re: Are Amber Alerts affecting your flight safety?
God I hope people would consistently do that. Just imagine having 75% of flights in Toronto cancelled because of an amber alert or tornado warning in Thunder Bay. That would send a message rather quickly!
