Any truth to the rumor that an email went out this week indicating plans to reduce the YYC base and create a YTZ base?

Yes, Company wants to open YTZ base, 10 CA and 10FO. Reductions to both the Q400 and RJ roster in YYC. Union and Company still have to sort this out. Equipment Bid should be out soon.

The YYC CRJ base has been living on borrowed time for years.

The COVID shutdown followed by reduced resumption of YYC operations (particularly transborder) and the subsequent commercial decision by AC to abandon many YYC city pairs and reinforce that YYC was not a hub should have logically triggered a ‘right-sizing’ of the YYC Jazz base. That never happened.

There are what ….. 2 or 3 CRJ flights per day out of YYC? It shouldn’t be reduced. The YYC CRJ base should be closed. The JAZ CRC has done a great job of defending status quo, continually suggesting there would be dozens of paid moves incurred if YYC was ever reduced.

I guess now that prognostication will be put to the test.

That flying has only ever decreased... It won't be back to what it was in the 2010s.

I wouldn't be so pessimistic, nobody knows what the AC executive team is planning. YYC used to be a pretty small base until, like you said, in the early 2010s it became one of the largest bases with 50+ daily departures. Jazz never wanted to open a YHZ Q400 base because they weren't sure what aircraft or routes AC executive would put there in the future I imagine to the frustration of a lot of YHZ commuters. There's a lot of potential flying out west as YYC, YEG, YXE, YQR have grown significantly in population since COVID and I have no doubt that AC will return one day and use Jazz's smaller aircraft to re-enter the market. Westjet's service has gone to shit since AC left so there's a lot of potential for another carrier.
