'Twas the night before Christmas, Medevac style

Post by Bede »

I got a Christmas card form a good firend of mine. She wrote her own little verstion of the night before Christmas.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the hangar
The flight crew were working, without any anger,
The stockings were hung up in dispatch with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The medics were settling down in the lounge
The pilots were searching for cards they could scrounge,
We all were quite lonely, away from our houses
Spending this night far from children and spouses.

When out of the phone there arose such a clatter,
We sprang from the couch to see what was the matter.
The Captain, he answered the phone with a glare,
’Medcomm, you’ve got it, we’ll be right there’

He sat down at the desk to the plot out the outing
Arranging for fuel, a clearance, and routing.
As flight service confirmed the plans on the phone
The specialist said, ‘Watch out, you’ll not be alone;’

’The radar has lots of strange blips it is showing
Be careful out flying, wherever you’re going.
You just never know who you might see midair
Fly safe tonight, go swift, and take care’

The medics soon boarded, in parkas and boots,
With little red hats, they were looking so cute
They knew their work; it didn’t yet start
A child far away, had a very sick heart.

Home for a Christmas, it might be her last,
But during the day, she’d been fading too fast.
She needed a transport, to Children’s, no less
Her only hope for survival, lay there with the best.

The cabin lights glowed, as the medics got ready,
Preparing the pumps, the stretcher, the teddy.
We shot an approach, to a black hole beneath
Pulled up to the building; a shack with one wreath

We waited for hours, as the night it grew deeper,
The medics fought for this life, in a little pink sleeper
When the child was made stable, and ready to go,
We took off, Code Four, into dark blowing snow.

As we wished for some coffee, and fought with our yawning
Behind us the start of new Christmas was dawning.
The child was now waking, the medicine working
Looking out of the window to see who was lurking.

For out past the wingtip, ‘gainst the starry dark grey
Was a bright lighted nose, and a well loaded sleigh
Flying reindeer and presents, and, gee, this was weird,
A man dressed in red, with a furry white beard.

His eyes were aglow with a sparkle of hope,
And despite all the distance, we heard as he spoke.
‘I haven’t a present I can pass through the air,
But I promise it’s waiting, when you arrive there’

He pulled ahead of the window, where the girls eyes were pressed
And whispered to us ‘You all are so blessed,
You’re heroes to her, and to me, ever more
So I leave you with this, as I finish my chore’

‘Go safe my friends, as you do this flight,
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night’

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Amen to that.

The biggest fringe benefit of Medevacs is the luxury of genuinely feeling good about what you do...

Took my holidays over my week on. Picked a good one to take off too!

As of Sunday, 5 days into the shift, my base had done 15 medevacs including 3 on Christmas Day starting when the pager went off at 3:30am!

See you guys on the 4th!
