Cost effective way to maintain group 1 rating?
Where I am, 6 approaches in a multi will cost about $2000, is there a cheaper way that isn't a sim to satisfy the 6-6-6 rule, or is it better to just do an IPC when you need it?

Why do you need to stay current?
If you arent flying IFR thay often then you wont need the currency until you have a job.

You don't need to do the 6/6 in a multi. They can be done in a single. Only the IPC/PPC needs to be done in a multi.

At least for me it doesn't really seem comparable to real life, at least in a redbird
I'm dogshit now, I can't imagine how bad I'd be after a year or two on the ground

Doing 6 approaches every six months isn't going to improve your skills much/at all at your experience level. Save your money and commit to doing more training once you figure you want to fly IFR again.

I would suggest finding people at your school or local airport that want some company on IFR flights. Just tag along. Watching isnt the same as doing, but it helps. Maybe they will let you do the radios.
