Heavy turbo-prop

Post by stingray »

One of the question you have to answer online, on the Air Canada website,
is how many hour do you have on heavy turbo-prop.

So at what gross weight do you determine a Heavy turbo-prop?

I believe that would be a turbine with a max t/o weight over 12,500 lbs.

It's like your old instructor telling you read the question carefully on the exam paper. The question is pretty specific it states >12,500 lbs I believe.

you sure? I thought they didn't, same with king air 200 etc. They don't meet performance numbers required so they have to keep the weight below the "large" category.

A) I think Arrow was being sarcastic.

B) Corret me if I'm wrong but I believe a King Air 200 has a ramp weight of over 12,500 lbs but a take off weight of under 12,500 lbs.

Yeah the twin otter i think not. Here's one for ya - flew the embraer 110 max gross 12,500 but in the states was cert. for 13,200- yeah i know maybe this is why they're slamming into wal-marts singl-pilot. Interesting though-no. If the bandit counts as heavy time to fix AC site.

They make the limitation exactly 12,500/12,566 because to go over that weight would open a whole can of worms in certification. Ie, 2nd segment climb etc.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure no one cares about the A/C's Max Ramp weight, it's the MTOW that matters.
As for the HVY time on the twin otter... that might just depend on who the operator is 8) .

The military runs there 300 series twotter's at 14,500lbs.
You can also get ferry permits for twotter's up around 17500 or 18500, not sure of the exact number.

To be a complete pedant, the application asks for 'large' aircraft experience, not 'heavy'.

Small aircraft <12,500lbs.
Large aircraft >12,500lbs.

Heavy aircraft >300,000lbs.
Medium aircraft 15,551lbs.-299,999lbs.
Light aircraft <15,500lbs.
