Looking for pictures of YHM from all eras...

Post by hazatude »

Either ground or arial photos. I'm primarily interested in the buildings, but if there is an airplane in the foreground I won't complain

This year is Peninsulair's 60th Anniversary and I'd like to get some historical photo's that we do not have in the archives.

I will scan what we do have in the archives and share them with you all throughout the year.

Love,

Haza

Haz,

I had to do similar research and work a few years ago, albeit not for an airport or anything to do with aviation. I did, however, find the following useful:

- Archives - private, museum, and government-run archives are great sources for old photos and their proofs are usually well-kept, too.

- Newspapers - find newspapers that would have been around during the opening/construction of the airfield. Most likely they would have photographed and/or covered the opening and construction progress.

- Local stakeholders and families will quite often have photos of the area from when they were young or if they had a financial interest in the land. These were typically the most difficult sources of photographs as people are reluctant to share what they have and then they want WAY too much money to sell.

For an airport, I would also be inclined to call the Department of National Defence, as they would have had photos of the airport over the years for their training etc purposes.

You could also get in touch with the various provincial and federal heritage and historical minitstries/agencies to see what they can provide.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

John

You should consider trying the Hamilton Archives at Hamilton Central Library downtown at Jackson Sq. They've got lots of Hamilton history pictures and would most likely have a bunch of the airport. If they don't, they might be able to point you in a good direction of where else to look.

I'll take a look at what CWH has too. Thanks for the ideas guys.

I wonder if anyone has any old photos scanned on their computers?

All of the YHM pictures I have seen have a slightly balding, slightly pudgy line crew guy in them.

You could try giving Reg or Grace Spence a call Haz. You may have to REALLY speak up though. :)

I remember when they were moving their stuff out of Hangar #1, they had some pretty interesting prints on the wall and in boxes.

Has it been 60 years already? You don't look a day older than 40.

Sorry to make this thread go sideways but does Peninsulair do the ground handling or fueling of Jazz in YHM?

No. Jazz has their own ground handling (Air Canada) and Esso pumps the fuel.

Good idea on the CWH haz, we have a pretty big archive. Come in on wednesday and I might be able to help you out. I'll be at the lanc.

I have a picture of the short-lived "Zglanfordi" building if you want it.
