Can you live in Toronto and Work for WestJet?
I was wondering if commuting to work for westjet from YYZ is a realistic option or is it a real pain in the ass to try to make it work!
Thanks
Thanks
Yes, it is a realistic option. We have several people who do it now, and some from even farther out east, I believe. Obviously, be aware of the extra costs and time involved with commuting anywhere, but it is very doable.
As well, things are changing to make a commuters life easier. Crew scheduling is being more flexible, as well there are several items in the now ratified agreement that will make it easier (ex: if your last leg is a deadhead to YYC, you will be able to declare YYZ as your domicile and change the DH to get you home).
Also, we are starting a new concept in this agreement called 'ports'. Though there will not be any new 'bases' in the traditional sense, they will be starting to build pairings out of a city designated a port. This will be starting with YVR, but the assumption is if it goes well, YYZ would be the natural next step. Then you would bid for pairings out of your designated 'port', and would hopefully get some of them. There may still be pairings you'd get out of YYC (you would still officially be based there), but it would work towards making it even easier.
This will potentially allow us to increase certain efficiencies, and also make WJ more attractive for people who had been held back by a potential move to YYC. We want the best people from around the country, and this is how we are trying to make it more possible.
Any other questions, feel free, or PM me.

Ryan Coke,
I thought your response to that question was excellent. Nice to see a human being actually write something once and a while...
I have a good question...
For a new pilot at WJ, what type of places are you going to typically fly? Will you get to go down south at all or do you have to be there a while before you are flying to the nice places?
Could you give an example of a typical leg for a new guy in the first year? (Don't know how complicated that would be)
Thanks...206

You will go any where in the route system, except Honolulu and Maui (you need an ETOPS ground school, line indoc, line check).
Other than that, a typical month is anything but. YYC-YEG-YMM return one day, Cancun overnight the next, Halifax and TO the next pairing. Maybe a charter to a Carribean island or Panama in the same month.
I've been at WS for more than 10 years, and the newest Capt. upgrade could have a sched that looks just like mine.

As RVSM said, could be anything. The big thing to understand, is that there is NO seniority for most things. Obviously it has to be used as far as upgrades, but it means nothing when it comes to scheduling. You put your bid in once a month, and the system tries to give everybody as good a sked as it can.
Hopefully what RVSM said answered your other questions adequately.
