The Road Trip...

Hi There,

So my question is this. When do you think it is the best time to drive out for a road trip. I am in BC so I have a few miles to cover before I get to Sask, Man, and Ontario. I was thinking I would start my trip the last week of April or the first week of May.

I also have 280 hrs of float time and was wondering peoples opinions on what is really going on out there this year. Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

With 280 hours on floats, you don't need a roadtrip you just need a phone this year.

I agree, you should be able to phone around and get a position somewhere, but I would suggest start calling soon and then follow up in April.

with 280 hours your are hirable at any float operation but I wouldn't wait to much longer because most outfitters I know want to have their pilots hired by the first part of April. Good Luck

And for those who don't have that float time, when will it be time for a road trip / dockhand job in NWO ?

Where are all these places that guys should have no problem getting hired with 250 hrs on floats? Just curious as I currently have my resume everywhere I can think of and with 320 hrs on floats have nothing so far for this upcoming season. Have made many phone calls as well. Any help would be great.

Just remember that a lot of operators dont live at the float base all year round. Quite a few are americans, or spend the winter in a warmer climate.

it is all how the resume looks and it is a huge plus to call the places where you have sent resumes as a follow up it shows the people hiring that you are not scared to put the effort in.

Yeah I agree with whats been said all above. With those hours (with a total time around 500 or so) you'll get hired. But no matter who ya are, you have to get the job yourself. Call up everyone and shoot the bull. Roadtrips are good I guess but since timing is everything, it'd be nice to be everywhere at once. So do that! Make sure your email or cell is always on and indicate that in your resume. I think this year, operators wont be able to pick and choose they're 185 pilots from lists of guys with a thousand hours....I think they'll be looking for guys with your time and they'll be hiring RIGHT NOW....so I'd call them and ask them for a reason not to hire you!

Unless you have over 200hrs on floats I think the roadtrip is a waste of time. And with 200+ on floats there is really no need, I had a couple of offers last year with the mins and this year with a few more float hours under my belt I've had a couple of calls already with one serious offer which I turned down.

Jobs are out there boys and it's very early in the hiring season yet.
