IFR Clearance shorthand notes & tips

Post by Big Pratt »

What do YOU use for shorthand, abreviations & shortcuts when copying clearances, notes, atis, etc. ???
I've seen some weird ones, some amazingly simple ones and some that make the DaVinci code look childishly simple.

Share with the rest of us tips that make your notes simple, efficient and fast.

I do realize that some are graphic symbols, so if you can post them that would be great, if not, try to describe.

Should be interesting to see what some oldtimers have to say.

Ask an FSS guy for a list of abbreviations. They have them at the stations and will print you a copy if you ask nicely.

I use CRAFTV - write CRAFTV double-spaced vertically on the left, like this:

C (leared to)

R (oute)

A (ltitude)

F (requency)

T (ransponder code)

V (oid time)

Fill in what you filed to the right of the letters, and as ATC reads you the clearance, write in underneath only what is different.

A good example is "Altitude". Say you file for 12K. You know you're not going to be cleared to it, you know ATC is going to give you something like "4,000 expect 12,000 10 minutes after departure" so I would have something like this already written down:

A 12K

and then I'd write underneath it:

A 12K
4K e 12K 10m ad

whatever works for you.

Ya pop into an FSS if your near one and ask them for the Clearance abreviations from Manops. I'm sure that they will happily photocopy them for you. I did this for a bunch of my pilot buddies to help them. We have abbreviations for almost everything

EG: Depart controled airspace 50 nothy of Churchill = B 50N YYQ
Not above = NA
Depart runway 33 turn left fly heading 210 before proceeding on
Course = DR 33 FH 210 BPOC

etc etc etc.

There is a ton of them and they make life a loteasier. Also i see a lot of FSS shotgun there clearances at the pilot. If you missed soemthign don;t be afraid to task for a repeat and to slow down rather than guessing it can make all our lives a little easier.....Cheers

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Keep in mind when departing airports that have a SID:

The SID, squawk code and call sign/reg. are all that
is required to be read back, provided there are no
amendments (RAC 6.1) - nice n'easy!
