WestJet pilots receive higher compensation than Air Canada..
Air Canada's contract talks with pilots break off.
Quoted from Reuters Article:
Air Canada and its pilots must now head to mediation, and possibly arbitration, to settle the issue, the union said. The pilots cannot go on strike or be locked out over the talks.
The union said it presented Air Canada with a copy of the employment agreement of pilots for no-frills rival WestJet Airlines Ltd. (WJA.TO: Quote, Profile, Research), showing that WestJet pilots are paid more than their counterparts at Air Canada.
"WestJet pilots receive higher compensation and have better work rules in some areas than we do at Air Canada," said Capt. Serge Beaulieu, spokesperson for ACPA.
When taking into account wages -- including flight pay, paid training, stock options and a share purchase plan -- a captain flying a WestJet Boeing 737 earns about 13 percent more than an Air Canada pilot flying an Airbus 320, ACPA said. First officers at WestJet earn some 20 percent more, it added.

Seems that just a short while ago a group of pilots walked out on good paying jobs (and some training bonds) to occupy the right seat of a CRJ or Dash 8 for the next five to eight years at a miniscule starting salary.
Now they want raises. I wonder if the word "furlough" was ever brought up in the interviews. Seems like the old saying of be careful what you wish for might come to haunt them.
I dont expect pilot salaries to change very much in the near future and think most of this is just union pandering.
Guess we will wait and see though.

What are you talking about? This tread concerns the wage reopeners at Air Canada mainline and has nothing to do with Jazz. Our contract is settled until 2009. I suspect you're criticism about our "misiscule salary" helps you justify you're own situation. As for being "careful what you wish for", we are doing just fine at Jazz.
