Moving to Halifax... HELP!!!

Post by little_birdie »

Hello,

Moving to the East Coast from the West Coast at the end of September... I've never been so this is quite an exciting move for me.

Any info regarding the area would be welcome. Anyone of you have a one bedroom for rent?

Thanks in advance!

Are you going out there for a flying job? You will notice that the people out in Novav scotia are VERY friendly. I spent a month there recently and enjoyed the stay just because the people eased my transition.

The living is cheaper and the booze flows freely.

Don't get scared off by the winter out there, it can be a bit harsh. The rest of the seasons are just as pronounced. Take some time to see the sights all over, the valley is a beautiful place.

Good luck.

Hey Little_Birdie

Where abouts in Atlantic Canada are you headed? I might be able to put you in touch with some flying folks where you're going to hang your hat.

It's true about how friendly people are around here (I live in the Halifax area). If you're coming out here for a flying job, congratulations. The pool of aviation people out here is pretty small, and one would think that it might be hard to break in however they do seem to welcome new blood. (I'm a former "Upper Canadian", but born-again Maritimer)

If you're coming to Nova Scotia, you're just in time for a couple of the region's biggest events namely the Stanley fly-in (1-3 Sept) and the Nova Scotia International Airshow (9-10 Sept) http://www.nsairshow.ca/.

PM me if you would like any more info.

Cheers

Moncton i s a great party town!!! also everything is super close as it's alot smaller tha YHZ. You'll have fun, and not need a diesel.

As for living in YHZ and driving to the airport, it's not as bad as you think. But if you do drive alot, do buy a diesel and save some $$$$.

I'm moving to Halifax from Ontario on Monday for school. As other posters have mentioned, the airport is fairly far north of the city, therefore, a lot of airport workers will live in Sackville, Bedford or Clayton Park. However, if you want to live in the city (I wanted to be walking distance to Dalhousie) you'll find that the rent is surprisingly steep.

For apartments you can try:

let me know if you have any questions

Well, it's not quite the same high standards as The University of Pukatawagan, but good on ya, James!

Cars get old really fast out there, unlike Vancouver where they seem to last forever. So, don't go deep in the hole for a car.

I just got back from a one week gig out there...great people, good controllers and plenty of Keiths. Have a great time and keep us up to date.
One word of advice, stay away from the hokey touristy crap like the island hopper. You'll learn to hate it pretty quickly if your out for your morning / afternoon coffee / beer, it goes by a couple of times and you have to hear that guy spout out the same lame crap 4x a day.

I lived in N.S for nearly a year back in 2000-2001 and loved every minute of it. Would have stayed but good paying jobs are hard to come. I worked at the airport and lived in Enfield. 9km door to door, just 10 minutes to get work and 30 minutes to get to Halifax. Enfield/Emsdale is fairly cheap to rent (at least compared to Toronto), the people are extremely friendly, and awesome night life in Halifax. You will enjoy living there for sure. Great clubs, shopping, resturants, and scenery. I found that Halifax had everything you could ever need, but not the feel of a big city. I think you are envied by many in here, I know if the good paying jobs were there, like they are here in T.O., hubby & I would pack up the kids and head there ourselves.
