Wow! 5 pages, this is the most attention paid to FSS in 40 years, the 3rd class citizens under Transport. Any media reports, good, bad or otherwise,we were always referred to as Controllers, no one other than bush pilots knew who we were or what we did. And as no surprise, there are idiots in FSS as there are in the pilots group, but in my experience, only a very small percent, present company excluded. In the olden days, I always impressed on my people that, yes we are there to service or help in what ever way we can, for the pilot to make it from A to B without unintentional contact with the ground/water. But that was way back then, when there were isolated stations, no cell fones, and in the "Sparsely Settled Areas", we were the "silent watch". Many things were done above and beyond the call of duty. Example, Churchill, runway lights out due maintaince, Airport Manager, says, "extend NOTAM for another 12 hours", but there are 3 inbounds, medivac Otter, DND Buffaloe and private guy. "F--- em, they can go somewhere else.
So, off the the DOT garage and ask for a volunteer to put two vehicles with the cherry lights going on the end of 33. Radio to FSS and advise inbounds that land between us and you have 9000 ft of blacktop. All made it in ok, nothing ever heard from said A--hole Airport Manager.
Now adays, would be reports up the ying-yang, back then was all in a days work. As Robert Service once said, " Strange things done under the midnight sun".

I was just there today. I've been there many times and I haven't seen any arrogance on the part of the FSS there. Although, it'd be nice if they fixed the ILS. 800/2 just isn't gonna cut it with this weather out here.

I was there for the fuel haul in '98, didn't have any prob with YTH FSS either. They were doing their best to manage the large volume of traffic, we helped out as much as we could.

Of course, alot of things could have changed since then but.. like someone said, there are gooduns and baduns. Never had a problem myself though.

I've been in and out of there several times over the last couple of days with no complaints about the people there. It's tough to get a word in edgewise sometimes, that's a busy lil airport, but the people in the FSS have been very professional.

I don't post much, usually because I'm studying for upgrades or living my life away from a computer. But, I've had to sit for 3 weeks perusing his idiotic posts, posts which basically have shown:

1) A complete lack of respect for ATC, or at least a complete mis-understanding of how the food chain works.
2) That this guy, obviously never had the opportunity to lose the whole "pilot's are God" attitude that some shoddy school instilled. Too bad he never had to work the ramp, because his attitude would have weeded him out real quick. Lemme guess, 250 hours right onto a metro right?
3) A screwed up view of the seriousness of a violation. So , He has a permanant mark on his license and he's poud because he stayed home and played video games? While wasting our money?

Thanks for making pilot's look like a bunch of idiots.

Props to ATC for the help they provide, and
Props to pilots who have gotten over the God complex.

lilfssister... I don`t think anyone "hates" Capt S&J. I believe most are beyond tired of his holier then thou attitude, and that everyone works for him etc etc. Capt S&J is NOT someone i`d want on my staff, let alone having to share airspace with him. I agree with juicies shadow, when he runs out of people to sware at, he seems to lose intrest. Lets call a spade a spade here. S&J ran out of intelligent answers, and this topic needs to die a quick death.
S&J shows total ignorance to those around him, and all that we ALL do to make aviation a safer place. I sit in the left front seat too S&J, and I KNOW that every single fascit of aviation be it FSS, ATC, AME`s, TC, etc are all equally responsible for the safety of every flight. Yes, we pay the ultimate price if things go astray, but thats OUR choice as pilots. To say that FSS and AME`s and whoever else work for YOU is beyond comment, its just too ridiculous. Get off your high horse young/old? man. Theres more to flying then pushing the throttles towards the firewall. Its just plain SCARY that you dont see or understand that. Its a TEAM effort. All are accountable. Think about it S&J, seriously, think about it.

I was just shown this website yesterday by one of my co-workers. I read all the messages and I have to reply to this issue.

I know both the pilot and the FSS in question. As a matter of fact I talked to Capt SnJ the day after this whole boondoggle happened. Capt, you seemed pretty reasonable about it the day I talked to you hell you even understood where we were coming from. There is one underlying problem that lead to this whole issue.

The underlying issue is pilots screwing other pilots. Myself and everyone I work with and I’m sure a good many pilots to are getting tired of it. Capt even though creeping out onto Twy A and cutting of the C402 may have seemed small to you it could have really pissed off the pilot. You said yourself when I talked to you that if the pilot had called you on the "airmanship" issue you would have conceded and apologized. Well as I told you that day, the pilot won't say anything. He'll grumble under his breath and say to himself "I’ll get that SOB next time". Then a few days later he may have done something to inconvenience another perimeter pilot like not canceling IFR or something of that nature. Though the pilot inconvenienced probably wasn't you. Odds are that pilot won't say anything to him except grumble under his breath and say "I’ll get that Skyward guy". Well needless to say you can see where I am going with this, it is a vicious little circle that is completely pointless.

After the specialist said what he said to you he called me right up and said he felt bad for saying it realizing it may have overdone it. Hey when these things happen people tend to overreact from time to time kinda like you did when you started this string by stating that you were going to "rape" him. Which by the way is not a pretty picture and can be taken out of turn just as easily as the airmanship comment could have been. I realize you were upset and if I was in your shoes I probably would have been too. But making offhanded comments about people such as saying the girl FSS in the tower "Hot even before she lost the weight". Though this may be funny to you can be very hurtful to her which I think you should apologize to her cause that was waaay out of line and had no bearing on the discussion. As you can see overreaction is human nature.

But getting back to the topic at hand. The reason we as FSS sometimes say things to pilots such as the Airmanship comment however far out of line it may be. Is to hopefully either A: embarrass you or B: inform you into following common practices and hopefully lessen the amount of times that airlines get back at other airlines for perceived slights. We are not trying to be malicious we are trying to make life more orderly to ease our life your life and everyone else that fly's in Thompson. Now Capt don't think for a minute that you are the only person we have ever said anything too, it just happens to be the most publicized. We could care less about peoples egos all that is important to us is getting the planes either in the air or on the ground in a quick and safe manner. We have a very strict set of rules to follow and we do the best we can with what we have.

I don't think that the blame for this whole mess can be blamed on one person or whoever is at the top of the food chain. Suffice it to say we all have a job to do and I think we do a pretty good job of it here. If people could just take the criticism with a grain of salt and learn from it Thompson will be that much better of a place to work. Hey I invite pilots to come into the station to discuss this issue or any other issue they may have with me, this is how we learn , this is how we become safe, this is how we make thompson airport a better place. And remember a mistake doesn’t become a problem until you refuse to correct it. Thats my letter hope to talk to you all soon.
