I got it mellow...
It's little known that all Seneca grads can tell V1 by looking at the scenery going by the side of the aircraft, in fact this is a compulsory course in second year. They also learn to calculate takeoff weight by observing the 'squishyness' of the tires. Quite remarkable.

Actually it's a pretty economical way to learn to fly....and get a diploma too!

I'm still wondering about the comment made referring to the guy behind him and his right hand...I'm at a loss.
It really is scary though to imagine this guy walking around the terminal just dying to tell everyone about his "life altering" experience. I wonder if he even considered the fact that the tires blew after the pilot "put on the brakes"

I actually feel kinda bad right now...I want to call this guy some bad name, and make reference to a cows IQ...but I don't feel right about insulting a mentally handicapped kid.

There's one born every minute, I truely beleive that.

Guess I'll be the first after 3 pages to say I found the clip somewhat interesting.

RTOs are an emergency (well in a 76).

I didn't bother listening to much of the commentary.

Those who "lost 12 minutes of your life"...hang on while I put on my caring face.

The thread title is self explanitory. We all know how to use the cursor.

12 mins for an RTO? Hmmm........

don't pilots do a ton of these procedures before being put onto the real aircraft? So i figure if at V1 they're not committed to taking off, they'll abort it.

Just out of curiosity, does the 767 just like the 777 have a instrument reading for the pressure of the tire, because how else would they know that the tire is flat... they seemed pretty confident in taking off obviously since they were accelerating so the flat tire must of happened later on during the take off roll.

Anybody can explain that to me.

Thanks !

Hi,

You're correct - in a transport category a/c, an abort isn't perhaps a "non-event", but it's hardly the scariest thing in the world. High-speed, heavy aborts are definitely not desirable, statistically there have been overruns in those scenarios. It IS something practiced over and over in the sim.

I think this was covered earlier in the thread, but most aviation tires have fusible plugs that are designed to melt when subjected to extreme heat to release the tire pressure and prevent explosion. Such heat would most certainly be creating by the braking that happens during a high-speed abort. And the greater the weight, the greater the energy to be converted to heat. So those "flats" probably happened slowly on the taxi in or at the gate. I doubt the crew would have tried to taxi in on flat tires - if they had been that flat they would know, gauge or no gauge!

During certification, they do a run with the a/c at maximum gross weight and then abort. If you ever saw the series of the development of the B777, it's quite a sight to watch it taxiing around with the brakes on fire with the fire trucks standing by. Apparently for certification it has to be able to withstand the wheel fires for a certain number of minutes to reflect the realistic time for fire crews to respond.

Hope that helps.

I watched it a few days ago now, can't exactly remember, but doesn't the "expert" call V1 well before the pilots actually reject the takeoff? Clearly the man is delusional and will only serve the purpose of instilling fear in those passengers around him. Whats needed in something like that situation is not a man inventing theories as to "how close to death they came"....

ROFL!!! "On the road to hell." Hes probably just some armchair flyer...with the ability to calulate V1 by eyesight, of course  :P

So if the flat tire actually happened due to the abortion, what made these guys reject the take off

I think you'll have to reread the whole thread C182...

If I'm not mistaken, we don't know for sure but it's been said once or twice in some posts that there might have been a conflict with another aircraft (read possible collision).
