I love watching videos of this stuff, especially when it is done properly.

Very cool. I spoke with some Tornado drivers once while in Germany. These folks will do the same thing in IMC.

that scares me. To my knowledge, they are poorly kept in shape, they usually only get the bare minimum of air time and the tornado's dont have the full equipment for i.e. night low-level flying. i remember one of them crashed into a hill a couple of years ago while on a low level exercice in the US at night.

oh and guess where they learn how to fly low level?

How soon people forget. Remember the CF-104, which started out as a day interceptor? Well, it ended up in Europe as an all-weather low-altitude nuclear bomber.

My flight lead was the person who argued in the early 1960's that it could be done (all the air vice marshals and generals said it was impossible) and was the first to demonstrate the delivery in IMC. The CF-104 was single pilot, remember (except for the D trainers from Lockheed).

Man, look at the stabilator moving when that thing comes in for the landing.

Amazing stuff. Makes me wonder if there is any use for such spectacular aerobatics in a day where most experts agree that the close range dog fight is obsolete. Missile evasion maneuavers, perhaps? Deffinately makes for a damn good video!

Algerian desert ??? can you quote your source ?? I don't think the French airforce would ever be allowed to set-up base or conduct exercices on their own in Algerian airspace!

That's what they said about Vietnam. Phantoms without guns got a surprise. If you read some of the reports of air to air combat out of Iraq 1 (the few that happened), alot of them needed visual ID. If you have coalition a/c swarming all over the desert and only a couple enemy aircraft, it's hard to be sure you're attacking the right target BVR. Early versions of the AIM-120 amraam had the nasty habit of switching target locks once launched if a closer target came into the feild of view of the missile's radar. I don't know if they fixed that problem or not. The point is that under restrictive ROE (rules of engagement) pilots may not have th e option to use long range weapons.

Now, all I have to do is sit back and wait for some fighter-type to tell me i'm wrong...

Dude you hit the nail on the head.

Even with amraam, you may need to hit the merge and visually identify some dude simply because he COULD be friendly.

Nope. Solid IMC. They have a real good terraign following radar. Well on second thought now I guess its the autopilot that does the flying. Oh well.
