Military moustaches

Why does it seem that a disproportionate number of the members of our military (who do not get enough recognition or appreciation in this country) seem to have moustaches. Is this my imagination, or real? If real, why?

I wore a mustache because I was even uglier without it. Can't speak for the others though.

The navy still allows beards, at least off the ship. I'm not sure if you can still have one while posted to a ship or specifically at sea. The seal for the gas mask doesn't work well with a furry beard.

And besides, what looks cooler than a moustache with oversized aviators ...

My favourite military moustache is the handlebar type sported by some of our finest Militia officers. They can generally be found in the mess heroically telling the same lame old stories while proudly displaying their CD's and, in a few elite cases, their Balkans campaign medals from roto 13.
