Headsets for the prop free world

Post by loopy »

Hi all.

Have to get a headset for my first prop free position. I'm looking forward to wearing something a little lighter.

I know the Telex 750 is sort of the standard.

How does the Flightcom F20 compare?

Any recommendations for other units?

I take ear protection very seriously. Here's one of my helmets with built-in ANR:

I've got the Telex 750 and it's fine for me. Another popular one is the Plantronics Starset that plugs into your ear. I haven't used that one myself but they seem to be around in numbers.

If I had to wear that thing, I might have the same expression.

Loopy,

In all honesty weight doesn't really matter that much!! A few ounces here or there does not make a difference!!

Look for quality and strength...i.e. something that will last you for years!! I know 4,000h guys that have the same set David Clark H10-13.4's that they used when they got their Private!!

I recommend any David Clark. If you have megabucks, get the DC H10-13X (noise cancelling)!

I think the noise cancelling may be overkill for a jet job.

If you want to be super cheap and the plane has a mic you could just use a cheap walkman headset/ear bud with an adapter.

I agree with the last post. A friend of mine flying a 737 went to Radio Shack and purchased a $10 ear piece and uses the mic in the aircraft. He loves it and it is a lot cheaper than a Telex headset.

I suppose it depends on what you like. I know the Telex 5 x 5 Pro III and Plantronics MS50 are virtually the same but you can save yourself about $90 by going with the latter. If you're looking for something with ANR I'd reccommend the Sennheiser HMEC 45 which runs about $750.
