Going to NY on Sunday
Well on sunday I am going to NY. We will be departing buffalo and trusting the Comair CRJ pilots not to kill us during the 2 hour flight. Once we are safely back on the ground what the hell should we do?
What should we see? Eat? Do? Oh and whats good on the cheap?
Also do I pack the down parka or the primaloft jacket? Whats the temp like? I would imagine that the temp would be warmer than cottage country but with the wind whistling through the buildings in Manhattan I would think there would be a bit of a nip in the air.

She’s built like a Steakhouse, but she handles like a Bistro.
Let's kick the tires, and light the fires.... SHIT! FIRE! EMERGENCY CHECKLIST!

If you're generous, you may want to bring a few non-perishable food items to donate to the first officer on your flight. I hear they're paid below the poverty line down there.
"Yeah. There is a problem. You...because you're dangerous. You're dangerous and foolish - and that makes you dangerous! Now, let's cut the...crap. We've got a plane to fly. Let's try to be on time, okay?"

"ALI AKBAR" Wouldn't make much sense...but given the combination of limited knowledge and excessive paranoia that is common these days, it would probably work just fine.
What kind of comment is it on our state of evolution as a species that declaring one's faith will get you handcuffed if you're not careful about when and where you chose to do it.
Of course, saying "Jesus is Lord" in the wrong place could also bring about some nasty consequences. North Americans do not have a monopoly on intolerance.
Just the philosophical (and slightly sad) musings of a confirmed agnostic.

Please don't tell my mother that I work in the Oilpatch...she still thinks that I'm the piano player at a whorehouse.

Rupert Gee and the Hello Deli. Rupert is a pretty good sport. It's right around the corner in the same building as Letterman.TerrainTerrain wrote:Apparently that deli that Letterman goes to (and showcases) all the time is a sweet visit. I can't remember the name.. And if you can summon the time, the Letterman show itself is a good time.
Go to Times Square about 3-4pm and you can usually get free Letterman tickets. Guys with backpacks will approach you and ask you a skill testing question. Or you can apply online for tickets. They're free. Got called in 24 hours with a skill testing question as well.

It's better to break ground and head into the wind than to break wind and head into the ground.
Hmm... Depends on how long you are staying. NYC is not the kind of boring town.
Here are some things you might wanna do.
The empire state building (5th ave and 30somethingth) Probably the best aerial view of NYC short of taking a chopper tour or flying GA down the hudson corridor. Around $15 to get to the open air deck on the 86th? floor. You can also go to the 102th floor where there's an enclosed area for an extra $15, not really worth it in my opinion. Small difference in view, better spend it on beer somewhere else.
Be prepared to stand in long lines for security screening (as at any other tourist trap these days in the US) I would save the sunday for things that don't require a lineup. Weekdays are best for "touristing"
The United Nations offers tours. Worthwile if only to take in the atmosphere of the building where so many decisions afecting our planet are voiced (not necessarily taken).
There's a holocaust museum that you might be interested in.
Also the museum of natural history is well worth the time.
Careful of shopping, lots of counterfeits.
Central park is a must. Just stroll around for a couple of hours, bring a sandwich or snack. Take it easy and take in the sights of the neversleeping city surrounding you as you stroll through pretty trails in a maze of trees and picturesque rock outcroppings. Check out the lobby of the Trump Plaza on the south west corner of the park.
Time square goes without saying. See it twice, during the day and again at night.
Be careful when walking around. Traffic moves fast (when not grid locked) I think the score is still pedestrians:n Cabs:0
Statue of Liberty is free but you gotta buy a ferry ticket for around $12 bucks. Take the subway to the battery park station and walk to the ferry terminal. Along the way you can see the sculpture of the globe that once was in the WTC plaza. The statue is in a nice park. The ferry also stops on Ellis Island, the quarantine area for new imigrants back in the day. Interesting displays.
You can't take anything that won't fit into a milkcrate unto that ferry since 9/11. Oh and you can't climb into the statue's viewing platform behind the crown since that crappy day either. You can get a tour of the lower part of the statue but tickets disapear fast. Reserve them online or pick them up early in the morn.
For lunch I'd recomend Carnegie Deli, (better than the hello Deli) on the 7th ave near the corner of 54th. As you're Jew'ish I'd recomend starting with matzoh ball soup followed by their most famous sandwich The Danny Rose add a potato knish, have a Dr. Brown's celray soda and for the grand finale - sumptuous strawberry cheesecake. If you actually plan to get all that, don't forget a defibrilator, seriously! They have huge portions. If you're gonna have one thing, have the corned beef sandwich.
As for Letterman tickets they are not that easy to get. It's too late for online reservations. I'd recomend going to the Ed Sullivan theater (Broadway and 55th or so can't miss it, big flashing banner over the entrance)around 15:00 on monday and ask the cute interns wearing the worldwide pants corporation jackets. They do keep ppl on standby in case that confirmed audience members do not show up. Taping itself is from 1730 to 1830 or so but you will have a prep session lasting about an hour before. As a last resort you can call Jamie Gold 212 975 7671 and explain your situation in the morning. No promisses though. IF you know who I am do not mention it. You're on your own, that's all I can help you with.
It helps if you mention you're a tourist from Canada.
There was an aircraft carrier moored on the manhattan side of the hudson with lots of interesting aircraft, a sub moored along it and a barge with the concorde on it. Well worth a peek.
You must travel by subway, fairly cheap and part of the NYC experience. Cabs are expensive.
Also take the Staten Island ferry, about an hour round trip. Free too and provides you with a nice view of the southern Manhattan and the statue of liberty. Nightime is the best for romantic views. If you're into morbid fascination, then take the Andrew Barbera (sp?) that's the one that crashed into a pier a few years ago. Also do some research on the propulsion system on it, rather interesting (nope not a propeler per say) if you're the engineering geek like me.
On Times square go to the Virgin Megastore, the M&M store really cool and if you're with a chick you'll score brownie points if you buy her red m&m's... also there's a huge toys'r'us with a nice selection of car seats, avoid the section so she won't get any ideas.
And if you're lucky, you might get a NYC branded condom, they were giving them away last week on time sqare when I spent the snowstorm of 2007 NYC as it pretty much closed EWR for over a day.
Well that's all I have time for, sorry for the spelling as I gotta run and have no time to check or care. You get the idea. Have fun in NYC and post some pics when you get back. Do more research on the web and check the Wx on the net as well.
Cheers!

You might wanna check out Hogs'n'Heffers (sp?) not even sure if it is open but a few years back it was a hoot. It's the bar that inspired the Coyote Ugly movie. Overpriced but fun for a couple drinks. Hint: don't ask for water.
Niss I'm sorry, I assumed you were going to New York N.Y.
BUF-JFK/LGA in a CRJ is not 2 hours...
I think that You're going to New York, Iowa, in that case disregard what I just said.
Do check out the John Deere dealership, the butcher shop and don't forget to wave to the village idiot.
