What is your favorite type of flying?
For me, it's a draw between nailing an IFR approach in nasty conditions, and flying nape of the earth at Vne between trees.
If I missed anything let me know and I'll add it.

Special Ops for sure.
Whether that be off-strip airplane stuff, or long lining water buckets/drills/logs in helicopters, it's what keeps me flying. The straight and level Flight Level stuff just about did me in.
Of course it's different for everyone, and I do think the most enjoyable form of flight I've experienced has to be in a Cub on a calm clear evening, just puttering around. Doesn't get a whole lot better than that.
STL
PS, a helicopter category would be nice....

Cheers!!!
personally i find it hard to pin it down to one specific thing, i'm thankful to have had the chance (or been dumb enough) to do a lot of the aforementioned so it's more a collage of memorable vignettes (not unlike a full length porn movie but without the contrived "somebody order a pizza" business) rather than one stand out scene. low and fast, low and slow with an arm hanging out the window, gliding, beat ups, formation, floats, making contrails... it's all gravy.
Amateur flying is a lot of fun, as compared to doing it for the money, because of the diversity.
I particularly loved flying precision for CASARA, flying low and slow for aerial photo, and on saturdays enjoyed para drops!
Night spins were also fun...

Success in life is when the cognac that you drink is older than the women you drink it with.
The most fun and fondest memories is float flying. (also best for hangar flying DR)
The most worthwhile and rewarding was air ambulance back in the days when you were the ambulance, not waiting to move stabilized patients. Castlegar at night...
The single best flight though was at 320 kts 100 feet over a large body of water below sea level!
Like everything else though, high risk is great when you are indestructable. When you get a little older, straight and level jet transport with a hot coffee isn't all bad either.

Friendly correction: It's "nap" of the earth (NOE.)rsandor wrote:For me, it's a draw between nailing an IFR approach in nasty conditions, and flying nape of the earth at Vne between trees.
That used to be fun, but I loved the challenge of a complicated SAR mission. Even better, two back-to-back.

For me it is stealthing at low level in a no fly zone in Africa avoiding the Sam 7's and ground fire from troops trying to get lucky with an AK47.
And working for people who pay in US hundred dollar bills with no invoice required and no receipt given.
If you are going to fly you might as well not be bored is my motto.

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Have you really done this?
Cat,
That sounds like ultimate adrenaline! Have you really done this type of flying? What type were you in?

Like any flying that part is medium skills, but it is the risk factor that seperates it from driving a airborne bus on the same boring route day after day with someone to wipe your ass before you get in your airplane, and the big plus is it pays real good.Sounds like that takes about a "medium" amount of skill.
And of course you have to be able to fly without ATC leading you by the hand and go for days or weeks with no way to get weather forecasts and on and on and on....yeh it takes around medium skills like most flying jobs....but pays real good and you get to barter how much taxes you pay when you deal with officials.
Look lets quit fu.king around and have a look at what goes on in some parts of the world.
Do you think it would be safer flying into and out of Mogadishu or Toronto?
One of the most dangerous routes on earth is into the narrow entrance into Djibouti surrounded by Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea.
And the run out of Djibouti over the gulf of Aden between Yemen and Eritrea is another thriller.....I can relate to those routes because I have flown them.
So for a job that only requires medium skills you can have maximum thrills, all you need is to find someone to pay you to do it..........
Hint..they don't advertise here on Avcanada.
And if I was looking for another pilot to fly with me I'd hire Chipmunk or Fly Babe in a heartbeat because of their ability and attitude.
