Need Advice........proper etiquette
Here's my story
about a year or so ago a colleague that i flew with and did some recurrent training with got on with WJ. I e-mailed them to congratulate them and subsequently asked about the hiring policy. Believe it or not I wasn't interested in a reference at the time because I didn't have the min. qualifications. They wrote back about the procedure and they thought I was asking them for a reference. They had already decided who they would reference....i was not one of them. This person thought they were limited by who they could reference.
I now have an internal reference but was thinking of asking this person again so I had another one? Should I?
Any idea on the average number of references someone has?

Sure if your colleague wants to do it. Westjet has no limit on how many reference you can put in. Don't take this the wrong way but it sounds like he did not want to give you a reference. I don't know maybe he doesn't know you well enough. However if you don't ask you will never get it. Whats the worst he can say no. IMHO
Either you're in, or you're in the way
I don't think that's it. The problem is that my first e-mail was out of the clear blue. I never wrote them before. I was just trying to be nice....honestly. So now it's another case where out of the clear blue I am asking for a reference, whereas my other reference and I keep in touch.
Hey Wairrwee,
I've had a few people call me "out of the blue" for a reference. Even though I hadn't kept in touch with these people I still gave them a reference because I thought they would be an asset for WestJet.
Give your buddy a call and let him know you already have someone else putting in a reference for you.
Good Luck

If you're not bored, you're scared....... I'd rather be bored.
I decided to hold off. I flew with the person a few times only and did recurrent training. I enjoyed our flying very much and learned a lot but to ask them for a reference at this point i think makes me feel that I am using them. I am not comfortable with this. I think a reference needs to be someone I have flown with consistantly. If this person and I should ever cross paths perhaps I would ask them then.

If you have only flown on a limited basis with someone does not mean that you cannot give a reference. Even if you have not flown with the person before but you know them very well and know of their reputation... then you could always give a character reference which will be given consideration along with the other references(so I am told).
I have a friend who was hired with one reference. Of course the more the better. Perhaps your former colleage might feel he can support your friends reference. It might be a good idea to have your reference contact him and get his feelings on this.
Personally I have given a character reference of individuals that I have not actually flown with... or have flown very little with. Not all have been hired. One still has to pass the interview panel. That one you have to get yourself through.
It is admirable that you do not want to feel like you are using people. This is not using anyone. If your former colleage personally feels very reluctant to give references out.... that is okay too. It is free to ask.... the worst case scenerio is he simply says he would rather not. Not a big deal.
I know that when I first started I felt that my reference may not carry that much weight as the company has not come to know me. But I was told that is not true. Perhaps your former colleage feels the same way.
As the expansion continues you will find you will know more and more people that come to WestJet. That will not hurt you either.
Just my 2 cents worth.
I wish you the best of luck.
