Fire Situation in Northern Ont?

Post by Rio Bravo »

I just left Tbay a few weeks ago, and just after I left there was a fire right close to the airport. I was just wondering how the forest fire situation is right now? Has there been many throughout northern ont?

I know it was dry as heck the last few weeks I was there, and that 415's were already on alert. So I just thought I would see if there has been much activity down there.

Everybody has been real busy the last couple of days. Lots of flying and lots of gusty winds to go along with it. Overcast and cooler today so looks like things will slow a bit for a couple of days.

No on Sunday I spent most of my time in the land of OZ where a fire bug was having a great time starting fires in the 30 kts winds. He managed to get 4 started before they caught him and that night it was up to Ogoki because they didn't want to be out shown by OZ.

Ya Rio it is starting out pretty bad. Hopefully we will see some solid rain soon. Good luck in the north! Remember they sell those thin latex tubes for a reason!

I've been to 11 fires so far this year Cat and everyone of them has been caused by someone who in there infinite wisdom thought there lives would be better if they struck a match.
One poor guy started a forest fire south of YSB and then had to watch his cottage burn to the ground. We stopped it from spreading to his neighbours but one of them lost their pump house. Boy, propane tanks sure blow up real good.

Pretty much the same in the Northwest. We have had no lightning yet this year but are up to our asses in fires, which means they all have been man caused by one means or another. Some have been caused by the high winds we have had lately blowing down trees onto powerlines but for the most part it is pure carelessness on the part of humans.

Not sure what will happen when we get a cold front go through that sends out several thousand lightning strikes in a night. Sure hope I am on days off when that day comes!!

As someone who also fights fire for a living on occasion, I'll translate the above for you...

"Yo Rio, it's starting out great, if this keeps up I'm sure to make my contract hours for the year by mid-june, can you say SWEET??? In case somebody from the press is reading this, we all hope it's rains soon.... Oh, and don't stick your pee-pee anywhere you wouldn't put your lips...."

There, THAT certainly reads more like it.... Lol

Actually sky if you don't mind, I really don't need anybody to try and translate my posts for me.

What I said is I really hope we get some solid rain soon as we really need it. Couldn't give a shit if I ever saw another fire!!

Oh good grief, you guys have all the sense of humour of a brick..... Please.

If you don't care ever see another fire, may I respectfully suggest you get out of the Fire Fighting industry.... Come on, have a laugh for Christ Sake.

Don't worry Sky I have all the humor I need except when it comes to being a forest fire prostitute. I tend to get a little tired of people hoping the forest gets turned black so they can make a buck.

I have spent way to many hours over the years fighting fires that were deliberately set or deliberately let burn so people can gain financially.

Our forests are only a shadow of what they used to be. Thanks to the efforts of CLguy, and Driving Rain we may be able to save at least some of what's left. The forest industry in this country is no better than the folks cutting down the rain forests. We kill trees to make ass wipe...how noble!
Folks from the south (read, the center of the universe, the GTA) THINK we have forests in northern Ontario....we have HEDGES that line the highways. Walk three hundred metres into the "forest" and it's pretty much gone! Fly over this country...it looks like mange on a hound dog! All so we can all wipe our big hairy asses with double ply!
Persons starting forest fires to line their pockets should be burned at the stake!

Yeah,
It's been a while, but I just looked at Red Lake on Google, and, say didn't there used to be trees around there?
