Moving to Happy-Valley Goose-Bay

Post by benoit.baril »

Hi everybody.
I will be moving to Goose-Bay Labrador, where I just got an interesting job. :D
I was wondering if anybody knows what items i should not forget to bring with me up there except fishing rod & insect repellent.
Thanks a lot for helping me.

Bring beer. Party place down there! And get a ski doo for the winters, it's awesome.

All jokes aside, should be pretty easy to adapt in YYR, no walmarts though but all kinds of shops for anything.

Just to give you the heads up,, its a little expensive for stuff up here, Food and gas and stuff. When it comes to clothes and stuff, you better stock up before you come here. We only got jeans experts for brand name stuff. Besides thats its not a bad place. What company are you going to work for?..

Lived there for 8 years as an adult ( and was born there), loved it !! But I would recommend getting a ski-doo because it is very practical in getting around Goose in the winters ( Oct-May) The base has a winter carnival every year that is fun and the summers are dry and hot. The people are great, enjoy your stay!!

I have been in Goose Bay for a number of years working in General Aviation, its a great place. Air Labrador is a fine company, they will look after you. There is a number of Come From Aways (CFA) working over there, you should be fine. I will drop by some day and introduce myself to you. When do you start work in Goose Bay, Beniot. Have you been up here yet?

I should be in Goose-bay sometime between now and next monday which is the time when i'm supposed to start.
I have been up there 2 times last month (for a great total of an hour or so); on my way and back from a 2 week internship at Air Labrador dispatch in St-John's NFLD.

Agree with above, Benoit. I'm one of those CFA's  so I did find it a little more expensive to live around here but it could be a lot worse...

I dont know how you will get to YYR but I actually drove all the way from Montréal. The section from Manic 5 to YYR is mostly dirt road and some gravel sections so go slow if you are going to drive, the gravel can really rip up the car if u go to fast. You can actually rent a SAT phone for free from the wabush hotel in labrador city and drop it at the aurora inn hotel in goose bay once you arrive. It will be an added asset as there are service stations only every 4-500 km's of road and get a gas can!!! Good for starting a fire or if you run out of gas in the middle of nowhere. It can get cold at nights.

One thing I know for sure, you'll meet some of the kindest people in Canada here in Labrador.

Fullflap you sound very familiar :D

Plane from Québec city is how I will get up there ... guess on which airline?
(I do not own a car and I figured that canoe would be a little ... let's say... exhausting)

Bonjour Ben,

You are going to enjoy Goose Bay, no doubt. That's where you'll find the friendliest Canadians of all and nice aviation. Lots of foreigners and languages.

Enjoy and have one for me at the Sand Bar with the gorgeous newfie ladies!

I suggest getting a car once you get there. Goose Bay is an awesome place to live (especially if you like to drink!) but the town is very long, and no public transit system. Taking taxi's will get $$ very fast, especially if you live in the valley. The best thing about Goose is all the bars, great placve to be if you are single. Maxwells/Bentleys's is fun on a Saturday night, but the crowd can be a little young for some. Mcnalley's is a nice place to go shoot pool, Trappers is great for dinner and beers. Most of my family is living there now, but I haven't been back in a few years, I drink too much when I go home.
You'll love it there, trust me!

Techopsgirl is right about the car, and you'll find mint condition beaters for next to nothing out there, they use no calcium.

Cars and ski-doos are definitely not cheap up here. And garages charges an arm and leg to fix your car,,I KNOW,, ... You'd be better off leasing or buying a new car... Just my two cents worth..

Thanks for helping out everybody.
How much should i expect to pay for a small appartment (for one person). Is there any way that i could rent a small house up there? How much? Money, money, money.
What beer is the most popular in Goose anyway?

Just a small update on this one.
I've been I Goose-Bay for a little more than a week now. Everything's good. I got a spacious apartment down in the Valley, my job training is going well I think, I should have a car within the next couple of days (Goose-Bay is the Kingdom of Pick-up trucks... and I'll be the king in my 89 Chevy.)
Did not go out for a beer yet (waiting on my first paycheck).
Can't wait!
