MOH requirements.....why not salary?
Hey I have a concept and please let me know if it is already in place. If MOH is going to have strict requirements as to hours required for medivacs etc... Why not help the pilots out by having a required salary for the crew doing this type of work......
I guess cause it's typical for a large corporation/Government(what's the difference anyway?) to get as much as they can out of their people for as little cost as possible, with little or no regard to those people doing the work. They'll tell you they care, but it's all just window dressing... Man, I've been listening to WAY too much anti-flag! haha
"The price one pays for pursuing any profession or calling is an intimate knowledge of its ugly side. -- James Baldwin "
Because.....they always give the contracts to the LOWEST bidder. Ya gets what ya pays for! And, it's none of MOH's business what operators pay their pilots. MOH sticks their nose into our business enough already without giving them even more control. They know NOTHING about aviation. Their only interest is to "milk" something for nothing out of operators. We don't set pay rates for their people...they shouldn't set them for ours.
If you don't like what you're being paid, find another job.
Most operators are being brought to their financial knees by the overpriced back end staff!

But apparently you do and are cool with people earning very little to be pilots....
I don't know it seems like a good idea to me, you are basically working for them why not throw in a clause you must pay your pilots x amount to gain this contract. I am sure it is done other places.
Plus I am happy with my current job and pay, so i think i will keep it...thanks for the advice though

God knows a bus driver could formulate a better sentence.twnotter wrote:If you better pay, go drive a bus!!!!!!!!!!!!
The query itself is a valid one, and perhaps if this industry came by a little more solidarity it could happen. For instance, no medevac captain should work for less than 65,000 (just for arguments sake). But guess what, some genious would come along and do it for 30K because flyin' "is just so dang fun and I dunnwanna be unemployed". We're responsible for this, not the MOH nor the operators.
We've got supply and demand on our side right now, so go out and get what you're worth. Stick by the companies that treat pilots well, heck, flock to them, abandon those that don't.
Other than that, what Doc and Bater stated is perfectly logical. For the MOH or anyone else in that position, a pilot is a pilot and whoever does it for less is the favourite.
I do appreciate the thought saucerdriver, as you at least are thinking and aspiring for better things for this industry.

I thought that the medevac captains at VAL on the ka200 where making 50g because of an MOH requirement and that otherwise they would be making 35g or so.
Am I wrong?

Yeah your wrong the 100 drivers are making 36K or something around there I THINK. The 200 drivers wage has nothing to do with MOHNo Brakes wrote:I thought that the medevac captains at VAL on the ka200 where making 50g because of an MOH requirement and that otherwise they would be making 35g or so.

Depending where you work the medevac lifestyle isnt all that bad. My company does 12 hours shifts with 10 days on and 5 off. When I'm on call I can hang out in my backyard or anywhere within 15 min of the airport. The cell phone umbilical cord gets a bit old after a while but the pay is pretty good so it works out.
Hey Doc. When the owners are forced to sell theirs Boats, BMW's, Lexus, Caddilac Escalades, Lincoln Navigaters, Summer cottages, House Boats and numerous other things that the working public only dreams of, then and only then will I believe that companies are 1 bad flight away from demise.

When I did medevacs at VAL the captains started at 50G and it went up from there. There was a raise every year, and there was also overtime. They are short guys right now so there is lots of overtime to be had. The pay was not based on mileage.
VAL might not be the best place but it sure isn't the worst. If you are not in North Bay, then you are away from the chaos and politics and peering eyes of management.
The dedicated medevac crews have to be at the hangar ready to go, so there is a schedule with scheduled time off. You know when you work, none of this call out from home at 3 am.
Of course this was all 2 years ago, but I don't think much has changed except the pilots.
