if they want to go back to the 1800,s by all means do. on the way out of your heated home please leave the keys to your snow machine and your pickup truck behind. as you walk out into to the bush by the airport
would you also be kind enough to stop by the local law enforcement office to leave your firearms, as us wasp's get nervous with those around airports and expensive aluminium.

oh by the way the new parka that you had ordered from the catalogue
for delivery next week unfortuantely won't be arriving on time.
it has to be brought by dog team and since those skills have not been
used on a regular basis last we heard they took a detour at heckla island and have not been seen in a week or so.

oh since the first nations are funded by all canadians including the grand chiefs . would they please leave all the cash for attending the
multitude of meeting s and hotels bar bills and the like plus their salaries in the armoured truck so that t can be returned to its righfull
owner just like your land .. please I'll even donate my airtime on the cell

IT IS time for the wasp and newly arrived canadians to say enough :x :x
Ignorant ASSHOLE post of the month. Congrats grampa.

Yeah, I agree... in this wonderfully progressive age of PC, I always get a kick out of how careful one must be not to tread on anyone's toes and how sensitive some topics are... but turn it around and all is fair game!! I don't see why calling European/"New World" history inferior should be considered any less offensive.

Do you know anything about the history of the Native people of North Central and South America? Other than what you read in school written by European or New World authors of course.

Unfortunally in Canada the history of Indians and the reality of their culture now has no real connection.

First the Hudsons Bay screwed the Indians financially.

Then the missionaries screwed with their minds and changed their beliefe system.

Last but not least the Department of Indian Affairs drove the spike into their chests with the apartheid laws the Indians have been forced to live with for generations......

...what you see now I am Birdog has nothing to do with the history of Canadian Indians.

And no one can hang the racist tag on me because I am a status Indian.

I was Birdog, you must admit that it is difficult to deny the three issues that I brought up are part of the reason for the plight of Canadian Indians.

( Notice I gave you a new name? )

There is no argument. Your thoughts reflect mine regarding the topic. TO A TEE.

I only wish aboriginal blood flowed through my veins.

Yes…I was Birddog, and am happy that chapter is closed. No more “what ifs”.

Much Love .

I'd say that's irrelevant. European (using the term loosely for the sake of simplicity) history is worthy of no less respect than aboriginal history. And my point really was that I could not make the same comment about the latter without being labelled racist, so why is the inverse acceptable??

I am not saying anything negative about anyone. I do think that the way things are is not acceptable. I think the only solution that will work (and believe me, I have NO idea what that solution is!) lies somewhere in a framework that does not allow for "US and THEM". We are ALL Canadians regardless of whether our families have been here 10,000 years, 100 years or 10 years.

My mother's family was for countless generations in a town then called Friedland. I can't pronounce what it's called now 'cause I don't speak Polish and our family certainly isn't there anymore since WWII. I know, I know... not in any way a parallel example, but I'm only saying that man has been stealing land from man since the beginning of time... doesn't make it RIGHT, but we are all here in this land NOW and going to have to find some harmonious way of sharing it.

End of directionless rant. :)

I heard some real history, thanks to Nova. And let's keep hijacking these threads so pretty soon nobody will read them, shall we?

The story of Pocahontas was not accurate.

Pocahontas and John Smith were not in love.
She married a different Englishman in hopes of uniting her family with the newcomers. Her husband actually took her to live in England, where she had a child but she ended dying, at a young age. Apparently, while in England, she became ill and couldn't speak because she was betrayed by her friend, John Smith, who she had saved. For one thing, she thought he was dead, and that's why he didn't help her family. So then he comes to visit her in England, and maybe that did her in.

That is the more accurate version.

bmc if you have to use foul language to get your point across
it does speak volumes about your lack of class and courtesy.

90% of the northern pilots here have seen the waste of billions
and what has changed not much . no economy = no hope = social
problems /drugs/ alcohol/ suicides etc. regardless of ethnicity. 53 %
of all natives live off reserve -why, because they like everyone else want a future better for there kids than they had. there is no future in the reserve system a dreadful bad idea convtrived by well meaning do gooders and some bad apples .

Those natives who are not saying poor me and blaming the system and are out there working paying there fair share in private enterprize
my respect+ congrats too you.

arrogant a-- I am not but a heck of alot better read on this than
you so it would seem .

My ancestors wore skirts, ate sheep's stomach, and tossed telephone poles for amusement, but somehow I managed to get over that traumatic Scottish heritage that I am burdened with

I don't require that the govt pour billions of dollars over me to make me feel better about the past (but gosh, I sure wouldn't turn it down if offered).

I've suggested this before: the govt, if it had any balls, would announce that the subsidies cease entirely in 5 years, and the schedule is as follows: 80% the first year, 60% the second, 40% the third, 20% the fourth, 0% in five years.

Time to get a job, start paying taxes like other productive members of society, and work for a living like everybody else.

Yes. One of the few people on this site with the balls to say so.

So here's some monetary settlement based on some study or other: $XX dollars for each status Indian (or whatever they're called, under the most current and correct PC terminology). Take your money, and live happily ever after.

Don't ever come knocking at the door of the Government of Canada again. Nor can your children (or your children's children), or any generation. This is it. We are done. Here is the settlement, now please kindly f__k off. Don't bother me again with the whole "for the last 400 years" bullsh_t. That only explains so much. The rest is your own fault.

Set up your trap lines. Or move to the big city. Do whatever you want under the laws of this country.

God knows that *tens of thousands* of immigrants have arrived here with MUCH less than you, and have done FAR BETTER than you have. Maybe you should look to them for help.

Goodbye.

You want to hear about how terrible the conditions are for some natives on the reserves? Read this. These poor bastards hardly make $400,000.00 a year to run a 360 member band.
Oh the HUMANITY!
“Consider a recent news story out of Alberta. According to information leaked to the Edmonton Journal the chief and councillors of the 360-member Horse Lake Indian band in Alberta make superstar salaries. The chief took home $439,425 in tax-free salary last year (the equivalent of a $700,000 fully-taxable income). Two other councillors were paid just slightly less at $414,500, while the band’s Director of Special Projects pocketed $435,000.”
(snip)
The Horse Lake band government is relatively well-off collecting $3.3 million courtesy the federal government and another $6 million from oil and gas revenues. But with so much money consumed by administrative and political salaries, less is available for other needs leaving many reserve residents living in poverty and squalor. In contrast to the big pay cheques for politicians, last year the band spent a measly $2,340 for daycare services, $300 for a prenatal nutrition program, and cut its solvent abuse program.”

Does this remind you of anybody Chief Ovide Mercredi ?
I wonder what his salary is.

I'm going to get grief for this for sure.

And here in lies the problem. Nobody seems to care enough to fix the problem, just argue over who's fault it is.

I think Heldey is on the right path. The current system where we just keeping forking money over to crooked chiefs needs to end.

i think the aboriginal community needs to realize one important concept...

THEY ARE IMMIGRANTS TOO!

where the F do you think they came from? their ancestors walked here, and my ancestors took a boat. how does it make any difference? im just as much canadian as anyone else who was born here. i pay taxes and have to work to support myself, so should every other able bodied person in this country!

No one who has any political or financial association with the native community will ever petition for any meaningful change. If a native wants to live a respectful and productive life there are few options short of leaving the reserve. Native money in Canada has great deal in common with the financial dependency the USA has with their military spending (anyone see "Canadian Bacon" with John Candy).

I have known many natives who I respect and admire they're only hope as a community is to tell their leaders to take a flying leap and do what's best for themselves and their families.

“A Manitoba First Nations chief whose controversial comments made national headlines is refusing to step down, even though a band watchdog group has voted to remove him and his councillors from office.
Speaking to news organizations last month, Chief Terry Nelson of the Roseau River First Nation said: "There's only one way to deal with a white man. You either pick up a gun or you stand between him and his money."
Nelson has also threatened to block railway lines running through his community on June 29 — a national day of action to draw attention to aboriginal poverty and unresolved land claims.
Late last month, the Custom Council of the Roseau River First Nation served a notice of non-confidence in Nelson and his council and ordered a new election for the positions.
"Chief and council were given notice that their last day in office would be June 1," said Martha Laroque, the vice-chair of the council. "We don't have a chief and council in Roseau."
Council member Felix Antoine, a former chief and a political rival of Nelson's, said the comments were the final straw for the group.
"He's humiliating us, embarrassing us. We don't want to be portrayed as terrorists. We have to put a stop to this," he said.”
snip
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story ... tions.html
Another reason for the custom council to serve the non-confidence order was because of allegations of improper use of funds and your everyday corruption. Terry Nelson’s lawyer has stated that the custom council has no power or jurisdiction and so therefore I don’t expect any action and he’ll go on as before playing to the media and damaging his community’s profile.

Does anybody realise that every tax payer in Canada spends 800 dollars a year to support the natives. I dont know about anyone else but im getting tired of paying for them to drive their new trucks around and sit at home and do nothing all day. My ancestors did nothing to them,im second generation canadian. How about they give something back to us that give them everything
